Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadIf you're getting stressed about how long the QR questions seem to be in the 600Q book, then I'd say you'll be really surprised in the real thing! As it's definitely a lot more manageable in the real thing, so I think the 600Q book is a little too hard, but it prepares you for the hard questions(Original post by el.sammo)
I really don't understand how the QR questions can be done in 40 seconds
Good luck, but if I were you, I wouldn't stress too much over the QR! -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadSome in the 600q book are ridiculous but I'm on modify at the minute and some of these are still taking around 60-70 seconds, and it cant just be me since the average time for some of them is around 140-150 seconds(Original post by MedicalMayhem)

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadWell I didn't use medify, but I found the 600Q questions quite tough, and in the mock test it was by far my worst section. But it became my best section (by far) in the real thing.(Original post by el.sammo)

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
for qr the main thing is to learn the equations for percentages, mean median like the back of your hand... I know my times table upto 20 without hvaing to think which has helped a lot!
Most of the QR questions you don't need a calculator for I am finding, I'm not sure if it's because I'm out of education that I am finding QR a bit easier and not in the routine of having to do maths every day so I ahve found my own technique? -

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadThis question scared the living daylights out of me, especially as it is the first QR and took me about ten minutes(Original post by Lightingspeed)
Hi, can someone help me on the first question in the 600Q book, QR section why they divided 1.5 with 100 and then subtracted it from 1 to get 0.985? Your help is appreciated! Question is called exchange rates
I don't really know how to explain what you are asking but I'll try:
The commision is 1.5% but the reason they divide it by a hundred is to get the decimal equivalent. So really 0.985 is just another way of writing 98.5% but it is just easier to type into the calculator.
Don't know if this is what you meant or if I am talking rubbish

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadFor the QR questions in the 600Q book, I started off just doing them with no time limit until I got myself accustomed to the type of questions. After that, I pretty much timed myself per test, to see if I get quicker, but I focus on getting the correct answer, not on making the time limit. I'm still nowhere near the 36s limit, but from what I understand that's normal for those questions.(Original post by depiction)
I try, but finding it very difficult to do for many QR questions.
Although, I give myself about 50s usually for the AR to spot the pattern, then the remaining time to actually put which one they belong to (since most of the time is spotting the pattern).
How do people approach the QR questions? Within the time limit I find it's difficult to get my head around what the question is asking, let alone actually working out the answer?
I tried 2 tests on Medify one early morning when I couldn't sleep (about 3am), and with no pen and paper, with just my tired brain and the on-screen calculator, I managed to get all right and averaged about 40s per question. So if the actual QR is anything like the ones on Medify, no need to worry about time.

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadI've noticed that as well. I think the thing is that people are trying to work the question out in full before leaving an answer which I don't think is the way the UKCAT is meant to be done or practised. Instead you should practice to complete the question between 20-30 seconds even if it means you have to use an educated guess.(Original post by halii_94)
For QR on medify, one of the questions i was doing said the average person took 366 seconds to complete it!
surely in the real thing questions wont be this hard?
From the ~800 questions or so that I've gone through I don't feel like the QR questions on Medify are that difficult. What is difficult is when you come across a badly worded question or badly presented data. -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I have a Kaplan 2012 course booklet if anyone if interested private message me
It's got all the new style questions that have been introduced this year. Really helpful along with the 600 question book.
