Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I've used up all the questions in my 600 UKCAT questions book.
Annoyingly, I was too slow on all of the QR questions - it seems that merely typing sums into the calculator results in taking more than 30 seconds per question.
Does anyone know where to practice more quantitative reasoning-style questions? -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I think my only problems are understanding what the questions are actually asking me in the QR section which is making me panic because of the time limit and for the AR section is actually finding what the relationships are! All I can do now is practice and practice and practice...
Does anyone know the order each section comes up in the actual test? Is it the same every year???Last edited by Satta101; 20-06-2012 at 09:36. -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I was just wondering how do you guys answer the DA section
On the main questions do you translate the code by writing it down or do you keep it in your head?
because i write down the code in the question but I find this quite time consuming and was wondering how if their are any more effective approaches? -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadYeah I remember when I was practising for the UKCAT last year, I asked the same question when I attended the Kaplan course.(Original post by Richyp22)

I am one of those people who has to write everything down otherwise I'll just forget it and that's what I did for the Decision Analysis section but I made sure that when I was writing out the codes, I shortened them where I could (as some of them, I remember where quite long and time consuming to write out). Some people I found were able to translate the code in their head but that wasn't an effective approach for me.
Bottom line is just use whatever technique suits you best- just make sure you practice with different questions and try and work within the time limit!Last edited by groovyangel2008; 21-06-2012 at 01:15. -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I'm absolutely hopeless at the UKCAT. Did it last year - got 590.
Somehow I need to get minimum 690 but I have no idea how I will achieve this.
I have already done most of the questions in the green 600Q book. What other resource could I use? -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadDepending on how committed you are to improving your Ukcat score, I could suggest a £300 Kaplan course. I know they're not strictly necessary and may not be for everyone, but for me personally I want to make sure I do the best I'm possibly capable of. This year I'm planning putting in significantly more effort (600 average last year = no offers). That and buying a few extra books to keep me busy this summer(Original post by oz40)

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
Hi everyone
I haven't booked my UKCAT test yet because I have no idea when the best time is to do it. Up until the end of July (this school term) I'm super busy with organising stuff at school, open days and PS stuff so will have not a lot of time to practice. The first week of the summer hols I'm going to be away for a week. I'm getting back beginning of August time.
So basically, I can book it between early August and late September. Considering I have a weeks work exp at a hospital around late August and school starts in September, when would be the best time to book my test? I really wanna nail this thing!! -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
I don't think I'll have much time to practice myself. I will ONLY be free from August 15. I'll probably book the test at mid September.
Is a month of practice sufficient to do well, or do those who do well study throughout the summer period? -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
Hey guys can anyone help me out here?! Im somewhat confused about the whole UKCAT road. Basically Ive just finished my AS levels, now am I under the right impression that I need to do my UKCAT this summer for my application to various uni's in October ?

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadI did worse and realistically need to get a minimum of 700+ (I'm grad entry). We have to believe it's possible otherwise what's the point. I did pretty much no good practice last year, I did the UKCAT practice test and used a terrible prep book.(Original post by oz40)

I am now going to use the 600Q book and hope I fair better (or at least as well as I did before my degree when I got around 700).
Good luck to everyone. -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Thread
OK you guys i am going to come right out and say it. The quantitative reasoning questions in the ukcat 600 is just way too difficult. I really am having a difficult time solving the questions in the book under time conditions and they are quite difficult to understand on the whole. Could it be possible that the QR questions in the book is more difficult then the actual exam ?? I have heard other people say so but now i am starting to really get a feeling that this is true. Is anyone who has been precaticing QR in 600 ukcat having the same kind of difficulty with the questions??
-
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadI got like 375 in my 600Q QR mock last year, my lowest by far. Then I got 800 in the actual thing in QR, and I rushed it and finished with 4 minutes to spare, and it was my highest score.(Original post by lilmissA)

Though I think my QR in the actual thing was just an easy set of questions, it's definitely much much harder in the book. -
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadAR was the bane of my existence last year.(Original post by Tennumbers)
Any good tips for abstract reasoning? Really struggle with this!
I'd recommend you read the tips very well, and spend your time working out how to do questions, don't impose any time limit on yourself. It's one of these things where some people will be better than others (I could only manage like 2 of the sets of questions in the 600Q book initially), but if you practice, practice, practice, you will hopefully show some improvement. I bought the AR questions on Ukcatpreponline (UPO), did the Kaplan questions, the official practise ones, basically every single resource I could fine, and just did every single one of them, and eventually came out with 790. If there's questions you don't understand, just post them onto this thread and people will help you out and eventually you'll sort of get into this zone of looking at shapes, positions, angles, etc and be able to work your way through it. I never, ever, felt completely in control in AR, unlike in, say, QR, but I guess I just did the best I could. -

did you find kaplan worthwhile?

Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results Threadoh right I didn't realise they had some! thank you(Original post by Straight up G)
I didn't go on the course, I just used the free papers on their website.
so the only thing you paid for was 600Q book and UPO?
-
Re: The Big Medicine UKCAT 2013 Entry UKCAT Discussion, Advice and Results ThreadYeah as far as I remember. UPO simply had so many AR questions, which was my main weakness.(Original post by TaraBelle)
