what are the pro's and con's about being a teacher?

hey, all
i am interested in becoming a teacher (of english), and i just wanted to know what i could expect, and what being a teacher is like, so please tel me! :biggrin:

I think you will find there is training for teachers. It is also the
case that we write things in emails we would not write in an essay or a
letter of application. Wot do u think m8 :-)

The best two things about being a teacher are July and August. Also
good: you get to talk about things that really interest you to young
people who, mainly, are coming across these things for the first time.
Often, that's a genuinely exciting thing to do, as well as just being
pure fun. It's also good fun working out how to explain things that are
difficult in a way that children can understand ... even children who
find understanding difficult. Children love you for this when you
succeed, I suppose because people really enjoy learning things. So
that's a plus ... everyone likes being loved. It's pretty much of a
thrill, too, when you think seriously about initiating youngsters into
some of the greatest achievements of the human race so far ... we get to
do that quite a lot, and it's worth stopping and thinking about now and
then. And you also get to set these new generations on the path towards
their own achievements, big and small.

If you've got children of your own, you can manage things as a
teacher so you see lots more of them as they're growing up than
people in many other jobs. That's worth a lot: I know lots of people
(mainly men, I have to say) who spend/have spent so much time
succeeding in their (non-teaching) career that they miss out on their
own children as they grow. Teaching allows you the chance, at least,
of living with your family.

In many parts of the world (not so much UK, I know, but still ...)
teachers are respected members of society. And, thinking of other parts
of the world ... it's very easy to travel around to interesting places
and work as a teacher. Lots of autonomy about where you want to live is
a big plus.

There is a downside, of course. When you start out as a teacher (and for
quite a long time after) the job is intensely tiring, more so than those
who've never done it can imagine. In some circumstances (in UK, but also
elsewhere in the so-called 'developed world') it's difficult getting to
the point where you're able to enjoy the sorts of things I've mentioned
above because of difficulties children have overcoming other, mainly
societal, problems. Put simply, sometimes you have to spend a lot of
time and energy just getting children to participate in learning at all
... that's hard work (though commensurately rewarding when you succeed,
if you do).

(Particulary in UK) you'll have to expend a certain amount of time and
energy on useless paperwork. You'll come across fools who believe that
education is just a commodity the buying and selling of which requires
managing like an industrial concern ... and often those fools will be in
positions of authority. (Again particularly in UK) you'll have to work
extremely long hours.

And so on. If you're lucky, teaching is a wonderful way to earn a
living. If you're unlucky ...
