Post 3!

Useful information gleaned from people's experience in previous years:

LSE: look hard at GCSE grades, can take a veeerrry long time to respond, generally looking for AAA predictions
Durham: for V100, need around 7 A*s at GCSE, including History
Edinburgh: may also take a very long time to respond; predictions generally need to exceed BBB unless local or no family history of university education
KCL: tend to insist on their B at AS level
Oxbridge: GCSEs generally less important than people suppose; check out the Oxbridge forum on TSR
Warwick: are looking for evidence of ability in languages for V100 as a language module is a compulsory part of the course

For all unis: your PS is really important; see the Wiki Guide and post in the PS Help Forum if you would like yours checked over. Only you and the PS Helpers will be able to see it.

Also, if you have exceptional circumstances you should check with the unis concerned as they may be willing to consider you even if you don't fulfil the standard requirements.

Bristol does publish explicit criteria for assessing applications - if you go to the department website you'll find your way... eventually.... to this. To give Bristol their due, they got such a lot of stick a few years ago for allegedly discriminating against private schools that they got all their departments to write out exactly what their criteria are.

Interesting, as they haven't updated the UCAS entry! A good example of why you should always check both UCAS and uni sites.

List above amended - thanks for the alert!

For the AAA unis, would you need your fourth AS to be an A as well or would a lower grade be accepted? I'm guessing its going to depend on which uni it is, I assume most of them would ask for AAAa though

The ones that currently specify the grade they expect from the fourth AS are shown in the list (but remember that things change, so check uni websites for the ones you are interested in). Where a grade isn't specified, theoretically E - or rather, e! - will be enough but I wouldn't want to assume that at the higher ranked unis.

Very Helpful list, thanks a lot.

Pretty annoying about Durham GCSEs, especially considering the Oxbridge statement about them.

Thanks

Hey

On the Southampton's website they seem to claim that History V100 requires AAB rather than ABB. Just thought I'd point that out and thanks for the list!

Thanks - list updated.

Another good example of why I said you need to check the uni websites too - the UCAS listing clearly doesn't always get updated at the same time.

Once again I didn't want to start a new thread but if a uni says AAA/AAB does that mean they are more likely to pick AAA over AAB or vice versa. As I am not certain whether to pick Southampton or Exeter as my 5th choice.

Thanks

Not necessarily; they probably take into account things like whether the applicant is from a high achieving school, or whether there are some particular features of the application that they really like, and they are therefore keen to attract that person to their uni.

As far as choosing between Exeter and Southampton is concerned, the courses are very different I think so that should be your first thought - as your PS will reflect your interests, it might be that it's more suited to one rather than the other.
