Can anyone tell me if VISA Electron cards are accepted in UK? Especially in shops in and around Nottingham.

Yes, in most places Most international students tend to open a UK bank account and get a UK issued solo/visa electron card, and then keep a credit card or three in reserve for emergencies and e-payments.

It's accepted everywhere I've been on the high street, unfortunately not everywhere on the internet or abroad.

This

Basically when you go into shops, you shove your card in there, enter your pin, pin accepted and that is it and then you get a receipt.

The whole swiping of a card and asking for authorisation signature isn't as common anymore. The whole point of chip and pin is to so say prevent fraud and etc. . .(correct if im wrong anybody)

Most brick-and-mortar stores accept Electron. Online you'll have more problems, and it also won't work if the person taking payment can't process it immediately, such as on a train and sometimes in restaurants. So you're safe with most shops (all the big ones, certainly) but once you go beyond them you can't guarantee it.

yea, when I used to have an electron, I found Train Stations were the only place I really had a problem.

I thought it was being phased out, replaced with normal VISA debit cards?

I just applied online for Halifax EasyCash account...And stupidly I only just realised it was a Visa Electron card that they would be giving me. So from reading this thread, it is useable in most shops? and when you talk about restrictions online, does that exclude popular high street stores that have websites aka New Look, Tesco, Carphone Warehouse etc.

I too had a visa electron until I was 18, the only places I had problems was train stations and WHSmiths. WHSmiths now accept it and Solo. And Southampton train station is piloting it I believe (I noticed when I was buying a ticket and the bloke said South West trains wanted to start accepting electron/Solo at all their stations).

Tesco don't accept it online for some reason. Not sure about the others.

I've got a Visa Electron card and not had a problem using it in any shops, big or small. Only place I couldn't use it was in the ticket machine at my nearest London Overground station. They accepted it in the machine by the counter though.

Ah that is annoying, because i take alot of trains!
Is there anyone who had no problems using it on trains? Or is it general.. *SIGH* what is the point of trying to promote a card that still has restrictions

I have a Visa Electron and it's accepted almost anywhere.

I remember a while ago this website wouldn't accept it though.

I was having the same problem until I found this site which lists all the UK shops accepting Visa Electron or Solo cards:

Directory of UK shops that accept Visa Electron

it also shows other payments methods like paypal, check the website yourself, you will see everything there.
