http://www.gapyearworldwide.com which is cool because it has free volunteering placements unlike some of the companies who charge a fortune!

These guys a re excellent, they only take a few people a year but as they are a fproper chairty they only ask for flights and accomodation contribution. Also they are really involved and spend lots of time with you before you fly out and even visit you while you are there!

Look at the gap year section on http://www.linkethiopia.org/

I had a great time with them.

Hi guys,

When trying to decide who to go away with I looked on gapwork loads and yearoutgroup. From these I found Raleigh who run overseas expeditions. Their website is really easy to navigate your way around and there are loads of photos and case studies so you can read about other peoples experiences. I went away with them and had an AMAZING time - would definitely reccomend them, but would also recommend checking out impartial sites as well.

Hope this helps!

Im planning my trip with www.africanimpact.com
Massive range of projects. If you want medical type placements but dont have the experience they offer great projects. But they also do photography courses in africa which look amazing. Teaching, building, etc.
Anyone been with them before???

http://www.xtreme-gap.com These guys do adventure sport Gaps - Diving, Flying, microlights kick boxing and other pretty cool stuff.
you guys are providing an extensive list of gap year opportunities. I know many of you have different experiences and viewpoints, but is there any top notch organisation, which specialises in ESL teaching job placements you have been through? I dream of teaching ESL somewhere in Europe. Any suggestions? Thanks.

not sure marcel. I haven't heard of such a company.
a link to add to the database: www.projectgap.co.uk is new but it looks pretty sweet for getting advice and so on. Problem with gapyear.com and others is they're too preoccupied with trying to sell you theirs and other peoples' products to provide worthwhile advice.

anyone got any sport based gap year links? would be very grateful
Quite possibly a repost, but i cannot be bothered to check.

If anyone is looking to travel (I hate the word "gapyear" ) without spending money with a gapyear company, you can get some interesting advice and tips here:

Budget Travel and Backpacking Tips | TravMonkey.com
Not Going To Uni is rather good as well, deals with alternative courses, apprenticeships and stuff like that if you want something that isn't travel related

This is a good site to find out lots of good organisations to go away with, there was also a good article in the guardina over the weekend which categorised different types of projects and organisations that do projects and what they offer:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/travel/2010/jan/17/volunteering-abroad

I went away with Raleigh and had a pretty awsome time, there website has a lot of project info on there and some forums where people talk about project experiences and stuff:
