Default sorry to be really annoying but...

I am looking to choose a college at Cambridge - I am looking to apply for philosophy and I was wondering whether I should avoid the colleges that say 'science/arts mix useful' as I only do arts subjects? I know on the general requirements it says this but some of the colleges don't say anything at all about A level choices whilst others do...
I am not really trying to play any statistical games or anything it's just I think it would be stupid to apply somewhere knowing I was at a disadvantage especially considering I don't really have my heart set on any particular college.

Well, if you're really not sure, and you don't seem to have your heart set on one, just go into the "pool" for colleges. They will assign you one. If you don't get in there, but you're still a good candidate you'll just be re pooled, and put into another college. If you're good enough to get into Cambridge, they will want to keep hold of you, and thuussss it doesn't matter what college you put on your form. Remember it's only a preference - not a contract or anything.

Either try an open application, or just pick one that doesn't specify a mix of arts/sciences subjects. You're right not to get your heart set on a college, though - it's something that so many applicants do, and then don't even get in at all!

The absolute most important thing is how much you like a college. If there's a college you love, and they take students in your subject, apply to it - nothing else matters that much. If you're not particularly into any one college in particular then make an open application.

you could try emailing the admissions office of any colleges you are particularly interested in and asking them about it

Find the philosophy thread in the 'Cambridge colleges and subjects' subforum. Current students may be able to tell you what admissions conditions were at their various colleges.

I can't find it... or maybe I'm not looking in the right place
anyways; thanks for your answers
I would make an open application but I don't really want to end up in an all girls college which is where I suspect I would end up - it's not fair being a girl! lol
I'm sort of leaning towards girton but it's just so far away then again it is big. Is anyone at Cambridge - how self contained are the colleges? Would it really be that big a deal to be a couple of miles away from the city centre
