    dropping a subject?
Hi, im in year 12 at the moment doing 4 AS levels - art, history, english lit and lang, and media.

I did art for gcse and got an A and i do enjoy it but lately i have noticed how stressed i have become due to taking art at AS as it is so time consuming and im falling behind. I am thinking about dropping it now .. but then i would only be taking 3 (which i will definatly take to A2).

Im scared that if i drop art i wont have enough subjects to do english at uni .. but im unsure if it will really affect me if i drop art, as i only did it to make the subjects to 4 and because i enjoyed it...

i dont really want to do anything art based in the future (as far as uni or jobs are concerned) so im wondering what is the point in doing it if im getting stressed out loads and my other subjects may be suffering.

Please can anyone reply to this cos im really confused and need some people's opinions and past experiences etc?

    thankyou

i would drop it then contact unis and see if you need more As levels or A2s then you can do a part time course
you can do As courses where you only do one 2 hour lecture a week after school you can start these in september which you have missed or half was through the year
    hope that helps

Not many unis include a 4th AS in their offers so that will not be much of a problem. You probably should drop Art if you are struggling in it and it may cause you to struggle in your other subjects. If you really do need to take up another AS you may be able to next year, though if you get good grades in your other 3 AS levels this should not be necessary.

Some universities like the idea of taking 4 AS-levels and then dropping one subject at the end of the first year. However, if you're spending lots of time on Art then it may affect your grades in your other subjects. Chances are if Art is not related to the subject you want to do at university then most universities won't mind if you drop it.

I took AS History last year and never really liked it (dropped it at the end of the first year). For some reason I stayed on until the end though and I managed to just about pass it. Whilst it may not have been a good grade I doubt it damaged my application. But at the same time, I never spent much time on History anyway.

You usually only need 3 A-levels for uni. Although unis like you to have a 4th subject at AS, they don't usually include it in their offers, and since art has nothing to do with a degree in English, they probably won't care about you dropping it. If you can't cope with the work and it's making you stressed, drop it. Contact the unis you're interested in and ask if they require a 4th AS. If they do, you should be able to pick one up next year alongside your A2s.

Drop art. Then BEG the teachers to let you onto Sociology or Psychology AS -Level or even Relgious Studies and get another AS Level. :hello:

Be careful. If you look closely at most universities terms, they will normal specify that a 4th AS level is expected, but you wont be penalised if your school doesnt allow it, or if wasnt allowed to take one. Alot of good universities prefer 21 units, so only having 18 will leave you in a disadvantaged position for a competative course like english.

My advice would be to drop Art this year, and take a 4th AS level next year, but not a taxing one. Something like Critical thinking would be ideal.

But Sociology and Psychology are not too taxing on the brain if you work fairly hard through out the year.

Infact. Why don;t you self teach yourself in the summer of 2005. It can be done. If you really want it you will get it.

If you decide to do another AS level, you need to do it next year, as it's too late to join the class. In addition, you need to do the course with the younger year.

heya, i tried to drop French at AS when i was doing 4 AS subjects all together and they wouldn't let me. Although it was really time consuming and stressful as a subject for me, my head of year said when unis looked at my GCSE grades they would wonder y i only did 3 AS exams.
Most universities are totally fine with 3 A levels alone, although some do require an AS level, but many just run on points.
If you explain that you're finding it really difficult, maybe they can help, or decide what's the best option for you
