Which degree?

i would like to go into politics at some point after doing a degree at uni. i want to study something that would be suitable for a job within government and have been thinking of law, economics or history, all of which interest me. I don't know however what would be most beneficial and respected in this career path?

I think you should try law major in economics because when you enter government lots of law you will encounter from making it up to implementing it, and also it will guide you not be ignorance of the law.
