Welcome to the University of Durham forum: where prospective and current students can discuss everything from the differences between colleges to the nightlife, an abundance of Rahs to the Stockton campus.
I just am basically wanting some advice about how to manage my finances (eg what sort of weekly budget do you guys have and what are your main expenses?) I.e. how much money leaves your wallets and bank accounts for things like basic upkeep (buying toothpaste, deoderant etc), food, nights out, clothes, books, stationary etc on a weekly basis?
I know it'll differ quite a lot person-to-person but I would just like to get some input from others so I can start thinking now about how to properly manage my finances during term time especially!
too much
I didn't really budget last year, just spent as and when I wanted to, but tried to make sure it wasn't too much. Some weeks I'd hardly spend anything, some I'd spend far, far too much
It's just I need to consider what sort of overtime I need to do at work in order to cope with the costs... I'm thinking that a budget between £40 and £50 a week will be more than adequate.

If you are a lightweight and not too keen on going out £20 would be too much. Its the boozing which costs.

This man speaks the truth...if u dont drink or go out much then u will find that u will spend alot less unless u are going on some sort of shopping spree to make urself feel better...
I have no idea how much food prices might have gone up but if u are already catered for then u really will only be spending money on snackfood and "entertainment" money.
I never really set myself a budget either but i try not to spend too much...it really does just depend on wat kind of week im having: there are some weeks where i am calm and relaxed and just have quiet drinks at the bar...there are other times when i want to get absolutely blitzed and go out and come back with an empty wallet...
I swear when i remember on the amount of money i spent on fresher's week i cant help but wonder at all the other uses that money could have been put towards....hell with that kind of money i should have at least gotten a lapdance of some sort
I need to work out a budget for next year *one of this week's tasks*
I'm living out, going to try and spend £20-25 on food a week. Things like stationery, probably won't be a weekly expense, but they'll be a bigger initial expense.
im happy i get drunk off two pints maybe i'll be able to afford driving lessons??
2 pints huh? I'm a little envious (but only a little! I do have man-pride to defend after all ) but driving lessons are pretty expensive but if u want to then go for it. I've known lots of people who learn driving at durham so its not like its unusual.

haha, its great being a lightweight! well i could use my NUS card to get a discount, and the durham grant scheme has kind of given me a lot of disposable income lol! but thats good that people learn to drive, which means there is actually time to learn without it interfering with the uni work! im also thinking of trying to get a job in durham, even just work for one day a week- is that unusual?

Uni work in first year is laughable in the arts, as all you have to do is pass. if you are going to do work, the best place is to do it within college, i.e. the bar and the shop.

thats true, but even so, i want a first in my first year remember! i went down a couple of weeks ago and handed a CV in at my college bar and they said they dont have any positions available but they will get back to me if they do! i guess thats good
Even a first is not going to set you back any more than 40 hours a week, tops. Though I really don't see the point in trying that hard in 1st year, developing so called soft skills would be a lot better use of my time.
Unless you are going to be leading a rather ridiculous lifestyle, halve it.
nice one - £30 food is surely right though? A fiver a day... then drink on top of that, then expenses, how can that be just £40?
ps. can someone explain or link me to an explanation of the whole expenses and loans kerfuffle? does it work like:
1 loan for fees (ie. £3k) another for total expenses (ie. £3k) - if so, are we then expected to yse the expenses loan for accommodation, and provide the rest of the money ourselves (ie. income/savings/overdrafts etc)

Food should be no more than £5 a week here in first year, most colleges are full board. You can get pints really cheap in studenty places, unless you are a heavyweight drinking is cheap. Other expenses I would stick at around a tenner every week.
