    'Further maths is highly disirable'
what are the chances of getting into unis such as LSE which say that further maths is highly desirable - i want to know whether it is worth applying to a uni without further maths?? what are the chances of getting in

If your school doesn't offer it then you have a better chance of getting in without it, rather than at a school which does offer it.

I think it depends on the uni. This is Warwick's view.

Strong subjects are always a +. In general, if you do Further maths you will be one step ahead. This is a very very strong and difficult subject, strong because universities like it even if you do something not connected to maths. However if you find single maths challenging don't even think about Double Maths.

The perfect combination for me is double maths + physics - I think it will get you into most universities (provided you have A's or whatever they're asking for) with the major you want, in this case economics.

LSE - So many applicants with it (and they don't interview) you would be insane to apply without it.

    Cambridge - Obviously need it.

Warwick - will ease the pressure of doing a 2,2 for STEP (though I now believe they will accept a distinction in the AEA wtf)

Advice - LSE get's so many applicants (esp overseas) that applying without further maths is not reccomended - however, you could mention in your personal statement that you are self teaching the PURE modules only - or something like that. If not - and you think you can - take it up on your time.

How would unis know if your school doesn't offer FM? Would it be worth a mention in my PS?

Huh? Warwick's standard maths offer is either a single grade 2 in any STEP paper, or an AEA merit.

    Cambridge - Obviously need it.
No. You can get in if your school doesn't offer it.

    Warwick have really stepped down.

Cambridge AS FM is a requirement - you practically need the ful A level.

There were talks of asking for a 2 2 if an applicant only had single maths (for this year). If they want to compete with Oxford or Imperial they really need to start demmanding tougher (but by no means impossible) entry requirements.

Entry requirements have gradually increased throughout the years, and this year they made STEP/AEA compulsory for all applicants (which wasn't the case last year, applicants could get in through the AAAA M+FM offer). Neither Imperial nor Oxford make it compulsory. In 2007, Cambridge mathmos had an average A-level tariff of 565 UCAS points followed by both Warwick and Oxford with 533 points and then Imperial with 498 points.

Imperial have the 2nd highest entry - A's in all modules with no resits.

4 A offer is easy! Well easier since STEP requires additional work (which i really couldnt make the time for).

What course at LSE op? They dont do Maths.

What happens if you write on your personal statement that you are currently self teaching AS FM.. will their offer show that they want it (if you get an offer). Because I've only seen offers from unis with 3levels written

Is that high or pedantic? I dont think getting As in every module is an indication of mathematical ability. STEP is better.

Agreed. If they want the best, they need to test them with challenging paper
