Exclamation Bad experience with coil

Well, although most people have said how having an IUD is painfull but worth it, I would disagree. I had the worst experience with it.

It all started when i went to my GP who had fitted IUD's for 30 years. She had a lot of experience (questionable?). In my first visit, she started the process of opening vagina, putting gel in, then when she inserted the tools to measure my uterus cavity, it was too painfull! I had to have two local anaesthetic injections to the lining. Then even after the injections it was extremely painfull!! (why? no idea). She fitted the coil and said she was sure it was in the right place. She said my uterus cavity was 10cm !!! But because i was going abroad in a few days, to make sure she sent me to a scan. It was in the wrong place. So i called her and she arranged to see me the next day. This time she injected local anaesthetic again as it was extremely painful! But i was comfortable with no pain after the injections. She measured my uterus cavity as 5cm!! so she fitted a smaller coil. I went for another scan that day and it was in the wrong place!! Then i had a lot of cramps, it was late so I went to A+E. The consultant said she couldnt see the coil. so i had an internal scan. She could see the coil but for whatever reason sent me home. Im guessing she couldnt find the tool to remove it by using the internal scan. As she asked a junior doctor to get it and the doctor came with nothing. so i went home with antibiotics and painkillers.

Anyway I came in the morning, another consultant tried to retrieve the coil but it gave me immense pain. It was too painfull, i was weeping. Even after she did a local anaesthetic, It was unbearable!! I have a high pain threshold but I was feeling like I was going to pass out from the pain. She recommended that I had it removed under a general anaesthetic using a method called hysterescopy. No surgery basically, just removed internally using a camera up the vagina. I said OK. I waited till midnight before i was taken in as the A+E list was too long. Even though I passed out from the pain. unbelieveable. When i finally came out from the theathre, I saw bandages on my stomach. Turns out the coil had escaped through my uterus into mhy body as the doctor who fitted the coil had pierced through my uteruswhen she measured 10cm. The doctor who performed laporoscopy measured my uterus cavity as 5cm. so she pierced through during the IUD fitting!

I went through a lot of pain and I am now on the pill, I would never have a coil fitted or recommend it to any woman.

Just because you had problems doesn't mean that your doctor didn't have any experience. Having said that though, I do feel for you, I wanted to have the coil fitted when i went to uni, but my doctor decided it would be too "traumatic as I haven't given birth yet." Did they not give you antibiotics to start with? I thought that was something they give out after that procedure as a matter of course?

Hope you feel better soon

Terrible!!! I think I'd just stick with the pill, too. I'm sorry you had to go through that and I hope you're feeling better now (physically; I can't say I would have recovered mentally)

Thanks everyone. Yes i do have a case for negligence so i will take her to court.
Doctors are not good with fitting coils. Everyone has told me this. Even doctors and nurses in the hospital said i should have gone to a family planning clinic, nurses fit over 50 coils a day. hence more experience. doctors only fit maybe 3 a week in a gp surgery.

For people who dont know: a coil is a device fitted in the uterus of a woman to prevent pregnancy.

thanks for sharing that. I am thinking about the coil because the pill isn't working that well for me, but I had no idea about these kind of risks!
