Hello!!

Im an A2 student studying media studies, and my current topic is critical research

I am looking into whether knife crime is represented differently in tabloid newspapers (the Sun) to news channels (ITV news, BBC, Sky etc)

Please feel free to give me some opinions on the matter!!!

This is probably why media students have a bad name.

There is a proper research area, you know - to gather research and junk. >.>;

Ahh i've just finished A2 media - good luck!

You obviously need to find a starting point and plan your assignment.
You need good examples, scene analysis if possible, and good points to get a good grade!

Write an opening paragraph detailing your objectives of the essay.

You could make a point about how the audiences of both media texts are different - obviously obvious but you have to apply MIGRAIN to every element so might as well.
ITV remit to entertain - commercial. The sun is also commercial - socio economic scale??

Just remember MIGRAIN. (media language/institution/genre/representation/audience/ideology/narrative)

Good luck.

Perhaps look at the portrayal of tabloids vs. broadsheets firstly, as a point of comparison then bring specific examples of the same story, i'd suggest going on the individual websites finding a good story on the tabloids which seem to blow whats happened out of proportion, and then find the same story on bbc news or sky news and point out the differences between the two highlighting the tabloid overreaction and say the bbc's unbiased portrayal of events. I'd also look at how BBC are supposed to be unbiased - public funding, and how tabloids are profit orientated business, also the difference between the ITV/Sky news and BBC news as these both have different aims.

I'd say look at every comparison back it up with 1 or two points from a variety of stories and decide on your overall point, whether the tabloids and other non public funding news stories sensationalise the events, or whether the public broadcasting also either sensationalises or tries to play down the stories. Also maybe look at the dumbing down of the media in terms of tabloids?

Wow media studies did have some use after all
