Default Prospects of finding temporary work as secondary school teacher while at uni

Given the deficiency of qualified teachers in primary and secondary school thats all over the news nowadays, especially in science and mathematics, how common is it for these vacancies to be filled by university students as temporary work?

Unfortunately it doesn't look very good. There are programs that involve working with students, but I'm not sure whether it's paid work. Also you'd just be a teaching assisstant.

How many hours are you looking for?
Tutoring would be a good choice.

Yes, you'd probably find voluntary opportunities in the community working with children or in a teaching assistant role. Finding paid roles would be very hard indeed. Impossible at full teaching level.

But private home tutoring is fairly common.

So which pays more, private tuition or teaching assistant? Why would they rather leave a post empty than hiring a student that knows the syllabus well anyway?

To be a school teacher in the UK these days you need both a degree and a teaching qualification. Most students don't have either yet for obvious reasons.

You need a teaching degree/qualification to teach students. Knowing the syllabus well doesn't translate to being a good teacher, although it definitely helps!

I'd go down the tutoring route if you are looking for money. The thing is the hours aren't going to be great. It's just a bit of extra cash.
