Hello.

I am applying to study Italian at Oxford. Or at least, I thought I was until, having asked a question about the application, I was emailed by somebody at Queen's College who said that it was not possible to study Italian on its own anywhere at Oxford. This contradicts with the fact that on the Oxford website it lists "Italian" (R300) as a valid course, and on the UCAS website I was able to choose the same "Italian (R300) as a course.

Obviously this email came as a big shock to me. My mother rang Queen's College asking for more information on this and the conclusion was from the person at Queen's that "I don't see why you won't be able to study only Italian somewhere at Oxford". This has just confused me even more.

With the 15th October fast approaching, and me still needing to now finalise course options and my personal statement, I am eager for any information that somebody might have for me upon this matter.

I *think* you would need to do Italian and Linguistics if you cannot do pure Italian.

All languages can be studied after the first year on their own or in combination with another language.

Above was from the oxford wesbite. As to wether or not you can study italian on its own in 1st year, i cant find anything. Try emailing someone.

Mm, have just looked at the Pass List for Prelims, and have spied just two girls doing just Italian (though, I haven't looked that hard!) at St. Peter's and Somerville. So I'm guessing that there is capacity to study a language alone, certainly Italian!

Thank you for your replies. I think I will just apply to do History and Italian and write a separate personal statement for Oxford (none of my other university choices do History and Italian).

I would email somebody at the Modern Foreign Languages faculty. I wouldn't "just apply" for another subject because you can't find the course you want, as it would be hard to convince an admissions tutor of your commitment to History if you've only picked it as a last resort.
