Default NUS Extra

Fairly trivial questions here but I was a bit confused whilst registering for one of these cards.

1. When we register the card do we do so under 'Oxford University Students' Union'?

2. Where is the best place to have them delivered? I can't seem to find an option for you to get them delivered at home so they get sent to either Thomas Hull House or Nuffield College.

Any help/advice is appreciated

If it goes to Thomas Hull, there's at least a small chance OUSU will send it to your college.

You can only get a card if your college affiliates with the NUS, most don't because it's a complete waste of money (think ousu, but even less relevant).

I got mine delivered to my house no problem ... First of all I received an email saying I would have to pick it up from the Student Union in Oxford but then got sent another email saying it would arrive at my home address shortly, so I've no idea what was going on there. It was free as part of my student account, so thought I might as well.

I wonder if Lloyds will renew mine for me? Too much to hope, I assume.

Hm.. I got the first email, but not the second one. I might give them a call tomorrow, to find out where they're sending it.

Hmm, I might not bother getting one then. Would my bod card suffice to get me student discounts?

It should do during termtime, but there's no guarantees. I tried to use my Bod Card in the Shoe Zone inside the big shopping centre, but they said it wasn't valid My college isn't affiliated with the NUS, so I showed him my ISIC and he still wouldn't accept that I'm a student Luckily he had a youngish female friend who told him it was valid ID...

Whether it's accepted wherever you live varies from place to place

Me neither, even in shops that demand a valid NUS card. On the rare occasion where I have actually had problems, I just flashed my sixth form NUS card (which is about three years out of date) and discounts ahoy!

Shop assistants also seem to have discretion, for the most of it, so a smile always helps

Is there any page listing which colleges are affiliated with the NUS, or should we email the JCR?

It should say in your college handbook whether your JCR is affiliated with it or not. Or at least that's where I found out about Worcester not being affiliated with it

If your JCR is affiliated to OUSU then it's affiliated to the NUS (as of this year, I think - although it might not take effect for a few months). That means that unless you're going to Oriel or Trinity, then you should be able to get the NUS Xtra Card.

Yeah, I'm not sure I'd bother if it wasn't free (I have a Lloyds TSB account) - but then again, I don't think you can get discount when buying over the internet unless you have an NUS number, which comes on the NUS Extra card...

Anyway, I was just thinking about calling the NUS people this morning, to find out where they'd sent my card, when it plopped through my letterbox.

I don't think it asked for any kind of college information when I applied online. In fact, I've no idea how it actually verified that I was even going to Oxford ... Ah well.
