My dad used to own a naff £5 bike once. He had the lock and chain stolen, which was actually worth more

fellow medic at my college bought a culled bike from the porters for £10. it promptly broke down a couple of days later - chain came off (broke?) and brakes stopped working. he put the chain in a plastic bag and went to the nearest bike shop to see if anything could be done by the bikeman about it.
came back 5 mins later, and his bike, minus chain and various bits of the brake, was gone.
