Re: Should I take further maths?(Original post by Nimbus)
Hey you all,
I'm currently talking bio, che, maths and german (and CT but that doesn't count hehe..XD).
My maths teacher was talking to me last time thinks I ought to take futher maths alongside my A-levels as she thinks "it's a shame" that I'm not doing further maths as she thinks I'm capable of it and I "shouldn't find it too hard".
I personally don't know anything about it but thought, "yeah, good idea" but I wasn't sure whether I should.
I guess I'm very enthusiastic about maths and I generally find it really easy, however, I have to consider my circumstance atm...
I'm thinking of doing medicine in the future and taking a further maths A-level indeed will help but is it worth it? I mean, I feel I'm already pretty much occupied with all of my subjects plus extra curriculum activities right now. Then again, further maths shouldn't be too hard if you enjoy maths, find it easy and generally like a challenge, right?
Is it posible if some of you can give me some advise on this? Also for those of you who did/are doing further maths, can you give me your views on the A-level and how you found it?
And also, what else can I do to boost my "profile" up a bit? I mean, I'm only taking 4 A-levels and with medicine, it will be pretty hard for me to get in, right?
Thanks in advance and I hope you can help me.
Any help would be appreciated.
Hey, i'm a biochemist but studying further maths AS. i really enjoy it and its not too hard if you like maths and are commited to the workload, which is huge - be warned.
but of the 6 of us taking f.maths, i am the only one not doing it at uni, so kind of the odd one out. i took it because i wanted to do 4 a-levels but wasnt happy with my 4th AS result, and the head of maths thought that i'd enjoy it and do well in it.
an important thing to note: once you've done further maths, maths a level seems really easy, so doing further maths can pretty much guarantee you get an A in maths (even if you get a b or c in f.maths). you need AAA/AAB for medicine, right? so here's a way to be pretty sure of at least one A (providing you do the work!) -
Re: Should I take further maths?I know this is an old post. I am having the same dilemma now whether to take further maths. I am planning to do medicine. Did you finally take further maths? Did you score good grades? Did you eventually join medical school?(Original post by Nimbus)

Re: Should I take further maths?
Yeah, I know this is an old thread, but it would be nice to know the general consensus. Is it worth taking Further Maths as an extra option? Maths A-level seems quite boring, and FM looks like more of a challenge... But is the workload too much? Should I just deal with the fact that Maths is going to be fairly easy? Does Maths actually get more difficult? So many questions...
