Yes it does matter IMO.

I went to watch Sleeping Beauty Ballet in London and went to the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden and everyone there was dressed up soooo posh. I felt very under-dressed tbh.
There were men in smart suits or smart shirts, trousers and shoes, girls in lovely dresses and heels, even the kids made an effort - was a lovely evening and people really did make the effort.

So I personally would say make the effort and for the love of god, do not turn up in jeans and trainers . . .URGH.

True. I guess it's a really nice evening out for some people. Like going to a restaurant in central london, you see quite a few people all dressed up.

I go with a group of friends for a bit of fun, and we're all dressed quite casually, not scruffy though. I'd definiately feel out of place too!
