Civil - demonstration at open days

When I went to the open days for civil engineering at Imperial and Cambridge both did the same demonstration, and I am curious what it is called.

The setup was a cylindrical tank with sand/gravel resting on a gauze and it was filled with water. Water was also being pumped in from the bottom and emptied from an overflow tube near the top. The pressure of the pumped water could be varied and the idea was it demonstrated the effect on the sand of water flows. It gets easier to sink a body into the sand as the pressure of pumped water below increases, and if it goes high enough it creates a swirling flow.

Any ideas on what this is called/ a link to info on it.

Thanks.
