Class, isn't liverpool your firm anyway? :p: You been invited to a departmental open day? I got invited to one but I couldn't be bothered going seeing as I don't even plan on going there. Congrats though!

Nah, havent even got my liverpool offer yet :s-smilie:. My Sheffield offer is BBB but im predicted ABC (with the A in biology) so I need to find out if thats considered equivalent to BBB at the open day. Had a little look at that bursary thread but it seems to confuse me more when i look at it

Hmm, it's strange liverpool hasn't got back to you yet, but I'm sure they will soon. Come liverpool, it's where I'm going, you know you want to! :p:
I know it is a bit confusing tbh, I've got no idea, some fool decided to post a sarcy, totally irrelevant comment about everyone being in the same boat . Why bother posting if you have nothing productive to say? :eyeball: Oh welll.
Do you know if we have to buy any equipment or anything when we start? I know we'll need books and stuff, but I know optoms need an opthalmascope [i think that's what it's called] but do we need ewt like that?

Got my offers from Liverpool and Sheffield this week. Relief!

I found something on the uni of liverpool's site from last year that said orthoptics students didn't need to bring any equipment, but had to buy a pen torch, occluder and snellen stick at the uni as well a white coat for practicals (which cost £8.50)

Oh thanks! I just had a read then, it's quite interesting! I know we had to get some sort of coat thing, I heard we had a special type of scrubs for placement, but I dunno if that's the same thing, or if it exists :p:. I have a labcoat from chemistry in college though, I wonder if I'll be able to use that? :p:
Ohh interesting:
Essential textbooks that are used throughout the 3-year duration of the programme include:

Ansons AM, Davis H.
Diagnosis and management of ocular motility disorders
Blackwell Scientific Publications
ISBN 0632047984

Millodot, Michel, Laby, Daniel
Dictionary of Ophthalmology
Elsevier Butterworth Heinemann
ISBN 0750647973

Snell RS, Lemp MA.
Clinical anatomy of the eye
Blackwell Scientific Publications
ISBN 063204344x

This is all very exciting!
Hey all,
I just ordered Diagnosis and Management of Ocular Motility Disorders from amazon ['cause I'm a nerd:p:], for £60, my friend suggested to look on there because he got his from there, 'cause it's better than paying £120! It's yet to come yet though so for all I know it might have no pages! :p:

Hey, when do we have to buy this stuff for and where do we buy it from?

Hey, when do we have to buy this stuff for and where do we buy it from?

If you went on them links it says [even though I presume it's for the previous years freshers] that there will be a book thing and they'll sell all the ones we need. You never know, they might have changed the books and stuff. It also says they sell all the equipment there too.
Equipment

You do not have to bring any Orthoptic equipment with you, however there will be a cost for purchasing equipment such as a pen torch, occluder and a Snellen Stick. There will be a stall selling packs of equipment at the Welcome Reception on the 1st October 2008, so ensure you have money to purchase the essential items for clinical practice.

Uniforms and White coat

Uniforms will be provided by the School of Health Sciences, however you are required to purchase a white coat for practical sessions. White coats will be available for purchase on the 1st October 2008 between 12pm-4pm in the Henry Cohen Lecture Theatre, Duncan Building and will cost £8.50.

Blackwells bookshop will have a stall at the Welcome reception organised on the 1st October 2008.

There will be additional textbooks that will be essential to have in Year 2 and 3 of the programme.

You should read the link that rocketeer posted tbh! I spoke to my friend who finished his degree in summer gone, and he said the Diagnosis and Management of Ocular Motility Disorders is the orthoptic bible :p: And he got his off amazon. I figured even if we don't need it, it'll be a good read. So yeah  Just have a look around on the site.

Hey hey thread people!
Jeez, i just printed of the NHS bursary form... its WAY long =[ bad times.
Has anyone been sent anything about tuition fees...?
Student loan applications open mid feb, ARGH to many forms! Least that one you can do online tho.

Im a bit confused about the liverpool bursary... you apply for it within the student loans form and ive had it throughout my first degree but i read on the uni website that your only eligible for it if you pay tuition fees...which we wont be... yet other people have told me i am eligible! I guess it dosnt matter really, ill just apply and if i get it, i get it!
Moneys going to be tiiiiight next year tho =[ the only funding i can get is the NHS bursary and a standard non income assesed loan from the student loans people. EEK!

As for books and stuff, i reeeeealy wouldnt think youd need to buy them, Liverpools library is MASSIVE. The search i just did on the lib catalouge says theres 10 copys of the first book on that list and there ordering more and another 10 copys of the last book on that list. Id probs buy the dicitonary thing tho, that wud be quite usefull to just have i reckon.
They always always tell you to buy books when you start degrees, when i started Physiology they made us all go out and buy these two textbooks which cost a nice totaly of like £90 and ive used them less than five times and theres always copys in the library whenever u look.

I saw our 'uniforms' on some booklet the other day.. haha there excellent, well all look wonderful.
and labcoats... you can buy them from blackwells or pretty mcuh any lab building in the uni (of which there are loooooads!) but if youve got one from college or school that will be fine as long as its not coverd in terrible chemical stains lol!

I'm proper stressing about these bursary things, the forms look impossible!! I was wondering whether it's worth applying for the foundation to health sciences year 0? Because I have science A levels I dunno if they would let me go on it =/ Do you think it's worth it?
Have you got a pic of the uniforms??? I wanna seee!!! I'll probably use my college labcoat

Haha sadly not.. im sure i saw the picture in the healthsciences leaflet...theres a pdf version on the ortho website. Its liek a white tunic basicly.. like nurses wear.

Why would you apply to the year 0? that wud just mean youd be here for 4 years instead of 3! Personaly i wouldnt do it, you already have science A levels, the only reason for year 0 is for people who did the wrong a levels to get into med, dentistry, health sciences...
You dont need to as youve done the hard work already :yep: and as long as u get the grades required your qualified to go straight in to the orthoptics degree

I know, they do the med one at my college, just I don't have anything to fall back on, and even though I'm predicted 3b's, I'm a bit worried. Yeah I remembered reading somewhere about that, does have it like the uni crest on it and stuff? I can't find it on the site though :frown: Is what what we wear when we're on placement?

What did liverpool offer you? was it CCC?
To be honest most courses tend to drop there entry requirements on results day. Thats what happend to me, I applied to Anatomy but my grades wernt right and i rang up and they said they had dropped the grades from ABB to BBB but i stil hadnt got BBB so i did physiology instead. Lots of my friends had didnt get the grades requested but still got in!
If the course is over subscirbed they mite not drop the grades but i think youll probs be ok! :woo:

Also... the tunic thing.. you can see a pic on that link to the freshers page that was posted earlier. its a small pic in the top right hand corner.

Yeah. But I remember them saying on the open day that the grades are much lower than Sheffield because they'd lowered them in clearing and knew people could cope so they won't drop them in clearing. I dunno, I hope I'll be fine. I know what you mean about the foundation though, it's just college are presuring me into finding a backup plan or having Sheffield as my firm. But I work in opticians, so I suppose working for a year and resitting wouldn't be that bad, at least my job is relevant.
My book came today, and I realised instead of the Third edition [2001 I think] I have the first edition, which is older than me! I thought it'd be okay at first but I looked to see how any pages where different and there's 200 more pages in the newest edition. Damn amazon :frown: the stupid person who listed it only put one author on, Mein, who did both! Which is why it got mixed up! *sigh* So I'm gunna see if they'll let me return it. I hope so!:frown:
I'm proper excited for September though!
Reply 94
Ahh thats not good! They shud defo take it back as they didnt even say what edition it was!
Your college sound well pushy! mine never asked what was going on with my ucas after id sent it. I really wouldnt worry tho, Im SURE youll get what you need in your exams! Also tho, unis never say there gona drop grades on results day.. it looks bad and makes u think u can just not bother working hard! Obv you wana do aswell as you can tho, have faith! youll be fine! :yep:
Im also excited! but stressed about finding a house! AHH!
Reply 95
yup yup.

The colllege sounds rough! Don't be put off, You know what you're capable of. I'd go for Liverpool, (I'm stubborn like that.). if that's where you want to go. You can do it!

Sounds like a pain, Kiyoko, Luckily I can just leave the accommodation to the uni. Which halls would you recommend?

Did the Uni of Liverpool ask for the grades in specific subjects for anyone else? I'm doing four A2s and they asked for Cs in my weaker subjects and ignored my best one. I could miss Liverpool's offer but still get the grades for Sheffield. Kinda odd.

I know, they still haven't emailed me back! I'm stuck with it if they don't! And I doubt I'll be able to sell it to anyone else tbh!
Yeah it's proper annoying, it's the best in the area so they care too much about uni tbh, and my teacher [shes spanish and calls ucas 'oo-cass'] has no clue about uni in england and is just passing on the message from the higher ups, who now I say that I have to apply for foundation, even though I'd be wasting peoples time by doing so! I think I'll be okay though, I have a pretty strong app and alot of experience in optics, even if it isn't the orthoptics side, so hopefully that'll go in my favour is push comes to shove.

I hope so  Just 'cause college are ranting on about needing a massive 4 step back up plan [] and it's making me doubt myself a little bit tbh.
Awww poor Kiyoko! At least you already know people though! [well I presume you do if you're going to be living with someone!].

I'm only doing A2's so they just asked for a c in each one. What are your predicted grades? They're probably just trying to give you a really good chance of getting on. And what are your weaker subjects? If they're more science orientated maybe they would prefer you to better in them? I dunno, I guess it totally depends  They'll probably be a bit lenient though, especially if they're in clearing.

Hey!, ummm that really depends what sort of halls experience you want! Greenbank are the posher ones but there bar is a bit rubbish. I lived at Carnatic in Rankin and i had an amazing time. Started off in Lady Mountford but moved cause i didnt like it.
In carnatic its a really different set up between the halls. Basicly all the halls except Dale are centred around this big grassy area where people gather in the summer and play football or revise or get drunk haha. Dale is across a road in its own little section and so is a bit more seperate.
You have two sorts of halls at carnatic... ones in blocks (like Lady mountford) or ones that are just one building (like rankin)
Lady mountford and morton were proably the worst ones when i was there just because there organized into seperate blocks so you dont have such a big community of people. BUT the kitchens are better in those (or Lady mountford at least)
However, Rankin, McNair, Sailsbury and dale hall are the ones that are like big buildings and you get a much bigger community of people to socialise with. Two showers per floor (in rankin) and from my experience thats plenty, i think i only ever had to wait for a shower once!
Carnatic has a great bar and people at greenbank are ALWAYS jealous of it haha.
The rooms in all the halls i saw are pretty much the same and they always feel a bit rubbish when you first arrive but once you make it your own you love it!
My personal recomendation is this...
if your the most botherd about the quality of your room and having a bigger room then id go for green bank (tho i applied there and didnt get it as i think they give those to the medics mostly and the people who had unconditional offers or had taken a gap year)
But, if your more interested in the social aspect and just want a hall that is fun id go for somewhere like rankin, Mc Nair (closest to the canteen) or sailsbury.
I defo wudnt go for dale, lady mountford or morton, but thats just me!

If your trying to decide between caterd or non caterd then Melvill grove is the nicest of them all and realy close to uni but again they tend to give that to gap year people or mature or forgien students. There like self contained flats.
Mulbery is realy close to uni but looks pretty grim from the outside! but i know people who lived there and they enjoyed it
as for Philharmonic court... i have no idea where it is! which makes me think its not the best place!

I hope that was some help! sorry for the MASSIVE post haha.

Aww poor you! Well I suppose it'd be cheaper living in a house than in halls? Just ask around on tsr?
Ed: I added you on facebook btw, I stumbled upon you when I was seeing if there are any orthoptist groups!

I never asked what my predicted grades were. So I'm not really sure. The only subject I'm having trouble with ia English (they asked for a C in that) So I guess I'll be okay.

Thanks Kiyoko, that's helped a lot. Think I'll go for Carnatic, McNair sounds good... closest to the canteen. That's priceless info! Thanks a lot!

I'm pretty excited about September, now I know that there are other people doing the course. Glad I won't be completely lost.
