Yes it is possible... Just call and ask...
no, it would be easier to do it the other way round... as they may have given out all the plaaces for 09 entry
apply for 09 entry... come results day/ anytime after the offer's made, and if ur gap year is still planned to go ahead ask to defer ur entry
