I decided on investigating ions in a flame, but apart from the ions carrying a current and separating the free charges I've come to a dead end. I know it's a long shot but has anyone got any ideas as to what I could investigate?

you could use a thermocouple to investigate how the temperature varies in a flame
you could look at the spectra from different elements in a flame
put a flame in a strong electric field (between parallel plates) and see what happens
how quickly does a charged object discherge near a flame
