Re: NHS Clinical Scientist Recruitment
What experience does anyone applying for Clinical Biochemistry have? I've got a 2.1 in biochemistry and my 3rd year project lasted 6 months and was government funded, but it was in microbiology! Im going to be doing a 6 week workplacement within a NHS soon, in a medical laboratory so am sure will gain some new skills but is this enough? Im really stressed that I don't have any relevant experience and thats gonna put me at a disadvantage!

Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentThanks!(Original post by kay_begum)
The Clinical Biochemistry posts in London are up!!! But there on the website under St Georges. Theres only 7 posts available! -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentI worked as a medical laboratory assistant during the summers of my undergraduate degree (2:1 in Biochemistry and Biological Chemistry (MSci)) and now in the thesis pending stage of my PhD.(Original post by kay_begum)

A 6 week workplacement sounds great and i'm sure you'll obtain lots of new skills there!
Have you visited any labs? Where abouts are you applying? -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist Recruitment
No haven't visited any labs! And btw what exactly does everyone mean when they say 'visited labs'?!
I'm going to apply for the clinical biochem posts in London, as I cant travel outside of London.
Am working on my personal statement section of the application form at the moment, and have lost ALL my confidence due to my lack of experience and therefore lack of anything significant to write! Plus now feel worse cos just realised other applicants have more than 1 degree!! -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentOn the online application form, the box for your supporting statement expands to fit what you've written...but it doesn't seem to give you a word limit.(Original post by kay_begum)
How long is the supporting statement supposed to be?
However, when I've looked for advice on writing supporting statements, the recommendation seems to be up to - but no more than - two sides of A4. So, I wrote mine out in Word and filled two pages, which I then pasted into the online form.
I hope that helps?
-
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentI've also heard about the 2 A4 page recommendations, so I'd suggest to stick with that.. Mind that the font they use on the application form is quite large - when I previewed mine in the printer-friendly version it was more like 2.5 pages, while in word everything fitted nicely to 2 pages.(Original post by kay_begum)

I think all vacancies came with a warning that deadline can be brought forward if sufficient amount of applications is received.. Guess it just means that those vacancies were very popular?(Original post by j0j0binx86)
ok I've just noticed some vacancies for reproductive science have already expired!! with NO warning....argh! Has this happened for any other discipline?? -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentHey Fairycluff I'm going to the open day but not sure how I'm getting there yet cos I stay in Glasgow lol. I'm in for the morning session so I'll probably have to stay there I'd imagine. It's a 6 hour drive or 14 hrs on the bus (somehow), just deciding what's the most viable option!(Original post by fairycluff)
Cheers for that, I've also given Oxford an email, maybe if more than one of us does it then they may realise that they need to respond! That one is more annoying as the other Oxford Radcliffe places are up! maybe they hit the wrong button or something! Thats a relief about the London one though, once you've done your supporting information the job appplication is relatively simple! Are you going to the open day in Northampton? Just checked train times and I'll have to leave here (I'm in Aberystwyth) at 7.30 so it's going to be a lonnnngg day :P -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist Recruitment
Is there any point in me applying (trainee healthcare scientist in e.g. microbiology): I'm in my 3rd year of a Biology BSc, and should get a comfortable 2.1 (hons). My uni normally 10-20 (in all the newspaper good uni guides). Is a general Biology degree okay? (most of my optional modules are tough molecular genetics/microbiology ones). I've got no lab experience outside of my course, but I use PCR and stuff in my final year project. Thanks to any replies and advice
-
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentI have a chemistry degree and was wondering the same thing.(Original post by Joey_Barton)
Hey, and is there any point applying for 'Medical Physics' trainee sciences (with just a pure Biology BSc)? thanks -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentHey, I think you would need to make clear to them how much micro you did, i.e. explain your modules and the relevant lab skills you have in micro. But I'm no expert myself.(Original post by Joey_Barton)

Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentI've done a bit of research on becoming a medical physcist and it seems like they are looking specifically for physics/engineering graduates due to the nature of the work.(Original post by Joey_Barton)

Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentI emailed the person responsible for the post but this position says about the open day in its descriptor as well. Not all places have the open day as some prefer to invite short listed candidates. Hope this helps.(Original post by sd1718)

Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentYes! You sound like a good candidate, they'll want to employ a mixture of people who have post grad or undergrad stuff so if you're competent you'll have a good chance.(Original post by Joey_Barton)

As for medical physics, you have to have a physical science. Biology won't do but chemistry might if you've done plenty of the more physical options (eg. quantum/atomis/nuclear stuff). -
Re: NHS Clinical Scientist RecruitmentHey, I wanted to ask how you managed to arrange the work placement? Do you just call the department that you want to do it? Or did you write to them? I tried to get a placement last summer but they said they weren't taking anyone on. I assume its because a lot of them may have been taken.(Original post by kay_begum)
