The only colonial power at work was the British. They set it all up. (which was fair, considering what was being done to them in Germany)

Why did they abstain in the 1948 vote, then?

Why did they prevent Jewish immigration?

I don't think it was colonialism as such, due to the lack of a colonial power. It was far more old-fashioned than that - people saw some land and took it.

I can't really blame the Jews much; after all, that's how virtually every country of any significant age was formed.

Also I think it's also important to note the British Mandatory government was "siding" with the Arabs in the Mandate, working against a Jewish state - despite the Balfour Declaration.

Well, I think they were converted to the idea - well, were at least lukewarm to it - eventually as a matter of realpolitik.

Jews in, Arabs out.

Colonialism =/= Re-settlement

I think you've got to take colonialism out of the question here; British sovereignty in the Near East has been non-existent for decades (yes, I understand British governmental influence in Israel, but that's not part of this argument). Zionism, in my opinion, is a form of house hunting, and the Jewish population of the world needed somewhere to live, and they have a similar right to be there as do the Palestinians (I'm for a Palestinian state, and full Israeli sovereignty by the way, I'm not going to bum out Palestine on this one). The problems arise when one side feels they need to dominate the other, then you have a gradual decline to all-out war. As I see it, the Israeli's and Palestinians are two magnets, opposed to each other at the moment, because the Palestinians in Gaza voted in Hamas, and the Israeli electorate voted in Netanyahu's coalition. Hamas want to annhilate the Jewish race. Netanyahu wants full Israeli control in the Near East. Things like that, including settlement development supported by Netanyahu, mean that the magnets are not going to align, yet... But in relation to the actual thread, I digress. Sorry folks.

UGeNe, I don't want to shout you down here buddy, but colonialism isn't resettlement.

I think this would be rather interesting for your discussion.
Just found at youtube about Jewish colony near China.
They also asked Stalin about another colony at Black sea,but he refused.

1 Jewish colony isn't enough? That's more than any other country in the world was willing to offer...pretty generous of Stalin I would say given his preferred saying - no man, no problem
