alpha, beta, gamma chains

would someone please explain to me what is meant by alpha, beta and gamma chains in simple terms?! i've searched through so many textbooks, and read definitions but it doesn't seem to make any sense to me at all. does anyone understand it well and would be willing to put it into simple terms for me please?

alpha beta and gamma chains of what? They just mean chains of whatever it is that have different structures from each other.
