Good bloke
 Wrong kind of fiat. Engineering fiats are more usually concerned with saying things like "this is a hard hat area - no hat, no access", while medical fiats might say "turn off all mobile phones in this hospital". :yep:

Ahh. You know, I actually mistook 'fiat' for an especially flagrant malapropism of 'feat'; more fool me, evidently.

Just to play devil's advocate... engineers help change the world, true. But often, they just find solutions for problems that don't always need fixing. Why invent an elevator? We can walk up stairs (incidentally... I wonder who invented the stairs?)

Engineering is hard, alot of work load. But worth it, Im working everyday, from 9am to 10pm, with small breaks in between. Don't tell me engineering is easy, compared to ****** medicine. we save more lives than a medic can, why? we build a bridge, which has to transport millions of people a year. therefore if it breaks then we can easily kill 100s of people. while a medic can only save one life at a time.

You are not necessarily saving lives by building a bridge, you are making peoples lives easier. If the bridge weren't there we'd use boats or ships (yes another engineering feat< I'm loving that word today, btw) or... maybe even... walk around:eek:. An engineers problem of saving hundreds of lives wouldn't have come if we, as humans, didn't feel the need to improve all the time. We need safe aeroplanes, but why do we need to fly? I know why, but there are methods of transportation.
And I still hold the opinion that 1 life isn't less important than 100, but that's subjective, I suppose.

I have every respect for the Doctor who gets his rewards from seeing the patient walk through the doors at the end of their therapy, and absolutely no respect for the Doctor who gets his rewards when he checks his bank balance. I have every respect for the Engineer who gets his rewards from seeing his idea change and improve the world, and no respect for the Engineer who gets his rewards from his bank balance.

I can definitely respect that comment.

we were told that you learn more new words doing a medicine degree than doing a language degree from scratch so we are effectively doing a language degree along with a medical one

I didn't realise that medicine had its own specialised syntax, grammar and declensions. Tell me: is 'sepsis' a masculine term, or neuter?

I love how the people in these professions will label themselves as noble, while all they are doing is fending for themselves anyway.

well, as it is an english word there is no gender. but the fact is that there are so many new words to learn (ive just written up one lecture and there are at least 15 new words or terms just in that lecture on the formation of female gametes, if it was the same in all my lectures then i would have to learn about 300 new words or terms per week)

You're just learning more words, not a new language. Completely different thing. Nobody knows the entire vocabulary of English.

if they dont have an MBChB or MB BS degree then they arent medical doctors.

i agree they are working to do the same job but they do not have the same degree classification so they are no medical doctors. equally the medical researchers are not engineers.

we all need each others skills, otherwise one person could do everything and we wouldn't have a use for anyone else but from my experience, this is harder.

we were told that you learn more new words doing a medicine degree than doing a language degree from scratch so we are effectively doing a language degree along with a medical one

You're missing the point though. You're whole argument is that there is no nobler a profession than Medical Doctor, because they are saving lives and their job is more demanding than the job of an Engineer.

And my point is that if Engineers are collaborating with Doctors and doing the same research and the same work for the same cause, then why is the Engineer shunned and the Doctor hailed as the noblest of men?

My point is that there's nothing a Doctor does than an Engineer can't do. Saving lives is not exclusive to the Medical Profession. Hell, it's not even exclusive to the professional world at all. So why should the Medical Profession be the focus of many a shrine?

In general yes. But the league tables for individual courses are subject to vast differences to the league tables for universities as a whole.
Lol.

Yeah when I have cancer, I'll go to an engineer, thanks.

 Every profession has their own purpose. Get over it.

My uncle did an engineering degree, went to work for Schlumberger in the middle east and then in Moscow, and is now a multi-millionaire, from that job.

i have NEVER said that doctors are noble. read all my posts and you will see i have not said that. i have said that from my experience, medicine has a harder first year at uni than engineering. and i am not shunning engineers, we put their work into practice (MRI machines as you rightly said) to diagnose a patient with whatever ailment they may have

and btw, an engineer cannot perform a caesarian section adequately whereas a doctor can. just as i cannot design a bridge to be built that wont sway

if you think that then you do not deserve to have the scottish flag in your profile.

look at the guardian league table for medicine this year

1. dundee
2. oxford
3. cambridge
4. edinburgh

i think that proves we scots have pretty fantastic unis

Yup

Its working
Its broken
We're going to get sued :yep:

A lot of it is each to their own. You just have to look at various magazines and forums and you see arrogance in the engineering profession. All professions achieve amazing feats every day. From the supermarket shelf stacker who delivers a full aisle every week without fail to the engineer that delivers a working structure that will pass the rigours of time without failing.

There are many perceptions and stereotypes coming out. There is money in all industries if you work hard enough.

and then we look at the times:

1 Cambridge
2 Oxford
3 Imperial College
4 University College London
=4 Newcastle
6 Aberdeen
=6 Edinburgh
8 Glasgow
.
.
.
18 Dundee

That goes to show how BAD these tables are. if you honestly believe that Dundee is better for medicine than oxbridge you need your head looked at LOL
