Default Dropping French

Hey, I really don't like french!

I'm doing....10.5 GCSEs (just finished maths, and have started S1 )
I want to do: Maths, Physics, Chemistry A levels and a Psy As.
Will it matter much if i drop it?

Are you doing another language?

I don't think it'll matter that much, really. Although you would clearly be missing out on a gorgeous language.

Nope.

(other than Eng Lit and Lang)

edit: My mother says that if i have want to go on holiday to france when i'm older it will be helpful... Although having been to Paris 2 times i didn't really use french incase i said something bad...

Also grammar etc is a big leap from talking..i guess

are u year 11 or 10?
if in 11 u might as well continue.
SOME universitys ask that you have a MFL GCSE just for simply entering (look it up if you don't believe me)
i'm in/was in the same boat as you. i hate french and language all together (who likes em??) but i have come to learn that showing you have a qualification in a language, no matter how small, is valuable. the whole " it will help you abroad" stuff is nonsence. I, like you, am only aiming for a C, i find it incredibly hard conpared it everything else. If you really hate it then drop it, if i had a different/worse teacher than the 1 i have know i wouldn't do it: however the one i have is really great. If youre clever at other subjects but fail to even try a language. Remember at GCSE your not learning the subject, ur learning the discipline! (anyone else think that)

Not really, depends what year you're in. If you're in Year 11, why not try sticking it out till the end...

nah stick at it. A C is better than nothing. By the time you're applying to uni even more universities than now will be asking for a modern language at GCSE

Don't drop French, many employers consider it useful if you have a MFL qualification and I think it's wrong that many schools are not making learning a language at GCSE level compulsory. You should value any opportunity to gain a qualification, even if it's in a subject you hate. I never cared for Physics, but I didn't drop that. I hated maths, but didn't drop it because I knew I would need it. Now that time has progressed I would like to improve my maths, because you find that as you get older you regret some decisions that you made. I really regret dropping A2 Religious studies as it would have opened many avenues for me.

erm. me

I would stick with it OP even if you do get a C, for the sole reason that a University may ask for a MFL GCSE as part of admission criteria.

UCL and the like are going to be asking for one from next year onwards. Cambridge too if you're thinking of universities like that...

You can still apply to UCL if you don't have a GCSE MFL.

However, if you do get a place they'll force you to do a small module in a language.

Also, I thought Cambridge got rid of the MFL requirement to encourage applicants from different backgrounds?

It shouldnt matter. if you reallly dont enjoy it it would be possible to persuade your school to let you. french is compulsory at my school but my mate was the worst in the year and was alllowed to drop it, do the same if you can mate!

I dropped French at the end of Year 10 through necessity, but am taking the exams next year, 4 years on - I didn't regret dropping it when I had to, but I've gone back to it as soon as possible. If you think you can pass and you can cope with the workload, I'd advise against dropping it.
