I am an American student studying abroad at Oxford for the Hilary term. I have an idea of how cold it is supposed to be, but I'm still having trouble knowing what to pack, given the temperature and all the rain and wind. Also, I'm taking Crew as an independent study and don't know what to wear for that either. Oh, and do I need anything nice? Any advice would be great. I come from a warm climate and the thought of being freezing is stressing me out! Thank you!
Tscch, when you live in the arctic wastes of up North it's practically tropical down in Oxford.... Seriously a mid thickness coat and a few jumpers should suffice unless you have particularly low cold tolerance.
Actually that's a fair point, some of the oxford rooms can be a bit crappy and cold, that's probably going to be more of an irritant than the outside temperature.
Edit: that was sort of in reference to the hot water bottle suggestion
Buy coats here unless you have a few thick ones already.
Imo, temperature is bearable with just a hoody and t-shirt on with a scarf & gloves, but some nights you may want more layers. Especially something wind and rain proof for the bad days :P
In addition to all the other suggestions, drinking hot tea at any possible opportunity (and there tend to be lots) also helps. And if you're really lucky, your college room might even have heating...
Thanks all! I appreciate it and will definitely heed everyone's advice. As far as Crew goes, do I need a certain type of attire? Somehow I think that my usual workout outfit of tennis shoes, shorts and a t-shirt won't cut it
If it's rowing, you'll be cold. But then you'll be rowing hard. I believe I wore t-shirts once or twice. Maybe a long sleeved top would be good. Tracksuit is also good.
(Also, I found 'as an independent study' quite amusing.

The arctic wastes of manchester? That place is warm. Even up here in midwinter, when it might be -10C, you'd be warm in a hoody and t shirt. That's if you were walking about. If standing still, and it's windy, you'd need at least 3 layers, and that's good layers, jacket, warm top and something underneath, not just a thin cotton t shirt. Gloves and extra socks as well. And maybe two trousers.
Haha, yes, "rowing" (we call it Crew over here). As far as the independent study, W\we are required to take a physical education course to graduate, so I thought I'd row! It still is amusing though! And I'm hoping I won't get to much prejudice for being American...

As long as you don't say silly things, I'm sure you'll be fine
