Hey guys,
I do sociology

Im in my second year now!
Sociology is not bad at bham... ive had my ups and downs with the department but generally its all good!
Atm, sociology is based in the 'sociology house' at the top of campus (if your living on the vale its handy cos its nearer!) which is literally a house made into seminar rooms and offices :P however social sciences are moving into the new multi million pound redevelopment of muirhead tower which should be amazing when we move in easter!
The course itself is qhat you'd expect... you study inequality in gender, ethnicity, class, you study the classical theorists Marx, Weber, Durkheim plus others, you look at modern takes on sociology. Year 1 wasnt alll that interesting but then nearly all 1st year courses are renouned for being a bit boring as its mainly all introductions! The second year is way more interesting as you can specialise a bit although the work load is a lot more also!
The first year work load is pretty perfect in my opinion...i had plenty of time for socialising and spending time doing not a lot...but there was enough work to make me feel like i was actually at uni... i think i had 5 essays spread out over the year which is reasonable (this year i have 10!)
The department is ok as a whole, being fairly small you get to know certain lecturers and seminar tutors and the office staff which is nice. They are somethimes quite unorganised i find and sometimes like getting blood from a stone...however my persistance has paid off mainly :P
As you should expect there are better lecturer and seminar tutors than others...some lectures bore me stupid, some are really good...same with seminars! But thats Uni!
Bham Uni itself is amazing...i love it here and glad i picked sociology here...i think its 4th in the country atm..behind oxford, cambridge and warwick!
Any more questions just ask!
