in my year (first year at Sheff School of Architecture) there's more girls than there are boys. Which is a first apparently, but also showing the changing view on women in the subject. something like 3:2 as a ratio.

in mine i'd say its 50:50 if not more girls than boys.
in practice the numbers change drastically, maybe 85:15 men:women or even more. This is because few women go on to become architects (and carry on with part 2), but in uni you'll find it to be 50:50 in most places.

Exactly right, the figure for female architects in practice is around 15-18% if my memory serves me correctly. This figure hasn't changed for years and may actually be getting worse. Ultimately it began as a totally male orientated profession and though things are improving, the RIBA board are as much of an old boys club as ever. However there is hope! Ruth Reed is the first elected female president of the RIBA so perhaps things will change for the better, though Sunand Prasad is doing well under difficult circumstances.

i agree.
I think the reason many women don't stay in the profession is due to wanting to have a family and juggling that with a very demanding job. I think I might become one of those women, even though i love the job, it will never compare with having a family in my opinion

Lets just hope eh?

And, yeah the architecture profession is male dominated, but for the first 3 years I think it's 50:50.
