I think that the influence of the media on children is nowhere near as bad as it is made out to be. Some moaning cretins go on about how too much violence and swearing on television turns children into foul-mouthed hooligans, which is just not true. I know that you can't treat children the same as adults, but sometimes they are just being really condescending. And it's usually the adults that have never had any children that do all the complaining.

All the media is is an expression of natural human tendencies: we like watching violence, sex, emotional tension and shiny things on television because essentially we're quite basic creatures who enjoy money, sex, violence and do feel a range of emotions. Because the media so directly portrays this, it's quite easy to politicians, journalists, the Daily Mail etc to pin the blame for our basic natures on the media. It seems quite logical to say 'This child watches violent television and then goes out and kicks in some other child's head because the media tells him it's okay. Goodness me!!! What is the world coming to!?!' but actually people have been horribly violent etc for millenia. Pretty sure no one blames the crusades or the Ku Klux Klan on the media...
Anyway, my general point is that people like to find a scapegoat because it's so hard for most people to come to terms with the fact that people are in general fairly 'bad'.

Kids are impressionable. Many will imitate their television heroes. My brother did it; he's violent, profane, and disrespectful to the last now, and that's because of living in stupid television programmes where kids gambol around challenging and insulting their elders.

That was a staple of the media when I was a kid.

Most of the problems that are blamed on the media are just flat out due to poor parenting.

Oh, really? Well I turned out alright - how do you figure that? Yeah, I suppose letting kids watch programmes that are going to teach them disrespect is bad parenting as far as it goes.

Err... I turned out okay too, what's your point?

It's bad parenting if you let them get away with it, yes. If its such a huge bad influence, don't let them watch it in the first place.
