Final Degree Classification
I have a question how how my final classification for my degree will be calculated. In my handbook it says the following:
When the credit requirements for the award of a degree with honours have been met the honours classification awarded will be the higher classification arising from the application of the following rules:
- The average mark of your level 2 and 3 units, weighted 40:60.
- The average mark of all your level 3 units.
- The overall preponderance of units at level 2 and 3 (eg. 120 credits at levels 2 and 3 with marks of 60 or above to be awarded a 2:1), provided that at least 60 level 3 credits are included.
I was now wondering what it means. I aim for a first, so does this mean I would only need to get for example over 70 percent in 60 credits of year 2 and another 60 in year three to get a first? Could I have just 40% in all other units theoretically? This sounds a bit weird to me. If only your best 120 credits count toward final classification, this will always be better than the average marks of year 2 and 3 weghed at 40:60, or not? So this semester I have 6 units, all of which count for 10 credits. If I get 70 in them all, apart from passing I would not really need to bother for the second semester would I?
Also, I wanted to ask if it is similar at other universities? When I apply for a job or a masters degree, will employers or universities have access to all of my marks or will they only know about my degree classification? I hope you can help me with those questions. Thank you!
