Okay, so a myth that needs to be settled for myself and others.

On results day when one receives the letter form the college, I heard as follows:

A thick envelope indicates that one has an offer as the envelope will contain both the letter and the leaflets for the course.

A thin envelope - either pooled or rejected.

Does this contain any truth whatsoever. For example, do some colleges send out their course specific leaflets and general information on the course with the offer, or is this never the case?

2) My envelope contained 2 A4 pages, stapled.

When I got my letter from Clare college, I imagine it was thicker than a rejection letter. It did have some information about my offer and the college. This might not be true for all colleges.

If I were you, I wouldn't read much into it and when the letter comes, just open it straight away

A thin letter could be either.

yeah, this is a big issue for a lot of people. the envelope arrives, then the ambiguous thickness means they can't figure out if they're in or not. then they have to phone up the admissions office to find out. someone really should come up with a better system.

When I received mine, I thought it was too thick to be a rejection letter. As well as the letter confirming the offer, it had several sheets about funding and accommodation information.

Mine was really thick because it contained a lot of other information. It depends from college to college - I know my friend from Pembroke got a thick acceptance letter as well.

In general, I'd say that if it was thick, it'll probably be good news; if it's thin, you can't necessarily say either way.

Do they email your referee on like the day results go out or something? I'm not really nervous now (may change after test tomorrow) and am actually tempted to just wait for the transatlantic letter and do it the 'proper' way but it would be horrible to go to school and have my referee look at me with pitying eyes or something...
