MUN Recruitment Thread
This thread is here to serve as an advertisement for the MUN and a place to ask questions of current members to gauge whether you would like to join.
Introduction
In the MUN (Model United Nations) we debate and discuss international affairs and attempt to copy the structure and activities of the UN. All members represent a member nation or a UN organisation by promoting its views and values in discussions and polls. Behaviour is governed by rules laid out in our charter
Here is a list of the countries and their representatives. Most representatives display the flag of their nation in their postbits, and state them in their signatures which can be seen attached to their first posts on any page.
When you join the MUN you will be told how to get advice or instruction until you find your feet. Even if you feel confident, we strongly urge you to read the charter before you make a start. There is a precedent for the format in which resolutions are written, how long polls may last, how long you wait before setting up a poll, and a few other things besides. Don't panic! We won't eat you if you make a mistake, but all the resources are there in the TSR MUN wiki in order to alleviate any potential confusion.
As a new member you have the freedom to voice your nation's views in any discussion in the GA. You may also represent your nation's stance in any poll, and initiate new discussions. It is easy to find your nation's view; just put the name of the nation and the issue into Google. If you are battling to find your nation's stance, use your common sense and your broader experience of that nation's attitudes.
Hypotheticals, summits and more!
As well as discussing and debating real life international topics, the MUN frequently runs hypothetical situations for members to get involved in. These range from an EU debt crisis, to a Mexican civil war and an escalation of the Korean conflict. What's more, members can petition the Secretary General to create a hypothetical on a situation that interests them.
Summits can be called by any nation in the form of a resolution and they are a great way to start a debate on a topic that interests you. They often have the aim of drawing a treaty that nations can then sign.
How to Join
If you want to join then just apply to the group, here. The Secretary General will then PM you and admit you to the group. Please note that we will not accept people with very low post counts, because of the level of activity needed. If the country you would like to represent is not available do not feel disheartened, positions open up frequently, and if the person currently holding that position is not active then the position can be given to you. Also note that countries that are duel reped (ie, one person controls two position) then new members are able to take on of those positions. Look for available countries in green on the list of positions.
If you have any more questions then post them here, or feel free to send me a PM and I'll do my best to answer swiftly
A few of the countries that are currently free:
Democratic People's Republic of Korea
The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (aka North Korea) is currently held as a duel position, meaning it's available to new members. It's been the position I've held for most of my time in the MUN. It's a very interesting country to represent, and one that needs a fair amount of attention. The Korea war technically never ended, and tensions are still very strained between the US backed South Korea and China backed North.
Ireland
If you want to represent something a little closer to home, Ireland may be the country for you. Currently duel reped, its a country that allows easy research due to the shared language, while also offering it's own perspectives on many issues. Ireland has been hit hard by the recession, and could be further effected by the euro-crisis, so if you like discussing the EU or economics this may be the country for you.
Liberia
Modeled after the united states, this west African country suffering from slowly improving corruption issues and two civil wars could certainly use a UN rep! Liberia is a country with many problems. 85% live below the international poverty line, its economy has been destroyed by two civil wars and only a fifth of its people speak the national language (english). That said, it is also a country overcoming adversity as corruption lowers, education between the ages of 6 and 16 and a growing economy.Last edited by DayneD89; 07-12-2012 at 19:32. -
Re: MUN Recruitment ThreadProbably the wrong time to ask, although "irreverent" would meet the mark more(Original post by Quady)
Have you managed to be equally irrelavent over the last decade?
We are currently having a Christmas "Hypothetical Situation", which will probably result in humanities destruction. More can be found here.
I don't think that the UN is an irrelevant organisation, although that debate is for another thread
-
Re: MUN Recruitment ThreadI disagree. I've been at more MUN conferences then I can count, and I think that the structure of the UN is great for some things - humanitarian issues in particular. However, it is almost completely useless at dealing with a crisis. The SC gets paralysed by the veto threat and the Uniting for Peace resolution just doesn't do enough to overcome this.(Original post by KateBux)
It's not irrelevant, just useless -
Re: MUN Recruitment Thread
Hi there, the_mango. I'm the latest Secretary General

Well, those sounds like great qualifications, so I don't doubt you could handle being a representative. However, we do usually require a postcount of around 100 to join, in order to make sure the member will be an active one. If you'd like to get a little closer to this target, then PM me, we can take it from there
Thanks for your interest. -

I disagree. I've been at more MUN conferences then I can count, and I think that the structure of the UN is great for some things - humanitarian issues in particular. Therefore, what's the point of having a security council? No one should be allowed a veto, it's undemocratic, and means that the really important decisions that require a lot of debate never get sorted out.
And whoever negged me, I meant the actual UN not the MUN.
I didn't say anything offensive, learn what negs are meant for, and then use them properly. -
Re: MUN Recruitment Thread
Hi there taigan
I've had a look at your posts and noticed how active you've been recently. We usually require members to have made at least 100 posts on TSR. We prefer at least some of these to be made in D&D forums such as International Relations. If you'd like to reach 100 posts and then apply to the usergroup under My Accounts->Groups and name the country you'd like to represent (that's free on the List of Available Positions list in our subforum) then I'll review your application
Hope to hear from you soon,
Mrgd291190
Secretary General -
Re: MUN Recruitment Thread
I'm currently the MUNs deputy secretary general while Mrgd291190 is away, and I thought I would quickly advertise a few nations here
Hope to see some applications soon. Remember, a full list of available nations can be found here. You can apply to join here.
Afghanistan
The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan is probably best known in recent history for the US led war there, From invasion by the Persians, Mongol invasion through to the setting up of the official Afghan state. Right in the heart of Asia Afghanistan connects East, South, West and Central Asia, in recent years Afghanistan has experienced a near continuous state of civil war, broken up by invasions from soviets through to the current occupation.
Argentina
The Argentine Republic is the second largest country in South America. A land of extremes, Argentina boasts the highest literacy rate in South America, the highest point in the Southern Hemisphere, and the lowest point.
Cuba
The Republic of Cuba is home to over 11 million people, making it the most populous island nation in the Caribbean. As one of the worlds few remaining communist states, it certainly is an interesting nation. With a new, more capitalist president in Raúl Castro things look like they could get even more interesting for Cuba.
India
India is one of the worlds oldest civilizations, India has a rich and diverse history. It is the worlds second most populated country and its history is marked by peaceful non-aggression. It is one of the worlds fastest growing economies, but the country still suffers from poverty, illiteracy, disease and malnutrition.
Luxembourg
The worlds only remaining grand duchy in the world, Luxembourg Has the highest GDP in the world, and is an important member of the EU, as well as being a founding member of the UN and NATO. A small nation, but one with significant economic and political weight.
Indonesia
The largest Muslim nation in the world, a key economic player in the region and a future world power. A population of over 230 million, Indonesia is a burgeoning country. It has a military of 300,000 and a history, though declining, of human rights abuses. Politically, it is a founding member of ASEAN and the non-aligned movement. It's also a key area of terrorism, including bombings in Bali and Jakarta. It is an essential country for any debate, especially in Asia.Last edited by DayneD89; 05-05-2010 at 13:13. -
Re: MUN Recruitment ThreadAfghanistan is still free(Original post by Charlottie93)
I'd love to be MUN representative of Afghanistan, I love the Middle East.
I've not had any experience of the MUN but I do teach English to Speakers of Other Languages where I've met many people from developing countries and war torn countries.

Re: MUN Recruitment ThreadFairly active, but never as active as I would want it to be. To give you an idea of how active it is I passed a resolution (r rather the DPRK did as I represent them) calling for a summit which started a week ago and so far has 35 replies. Really it's as active as you make it. If you post and debate with people they will post and debate back with you. Our main problem with activity is lack of resolutions, but we always have debate threads even if no resolution comes from it.(Original post by Aj12)
