I don't know if its for me or not but Im thinking of applying to do the degree. Im doing bank nursing at the moment on psychiatric wards so I have experience but Im doing a psychology degree with the open university too is it best to finish this before applying? Or should I quit and just concentrate on the nursing? As a mental health nurse how easy is it to change careers as Ive always been interested in physiotherapy but don't have high enough A levels (thats why I started the ou degree to get a degree in something I find interesting).
I know I sound like an idiot Ive rushed this post lol but yea how do you know if mental health nursing is for you
Unfortunately mental health nursing has the highest drop out- its emotionally and physically tough, not something I have patience for unfortunately. see how you feel on the psychiatric wards- carry on with the psychology degree, but if after some time you REALLY know this is what you want to do, go for MH nursing, it may be worth putting an application in now?

Thanks, yea to be honest Ive found it more boring than anything but I seem to handle boredom ok. There have been odd times when its really stressful when you get threatened etc but most of the time it seems to involve just chatting to the patients. The elderly wards are a lot harder work. Ive been bank nursing for over a year now and I still can' decide, part of me thinks that if I went for it Id be signing my life away when I could be properly enjoying another career but on the other hand its what Im interested in, psychoanalysing and helping people etc.
Out of interest how much free time do you have on the degree? How many hours are you putting in each week? I know it shouldn't be as important to me but Ive got a habit of jogging and going to the gym everyday would I have to give this up?.

Try doing adult nursing- you have a common foundation year where you get placements in all branches, and then in your first year, if you DO want to change you could talk to your tutor about changing branches

My mums an adult nurse she says mental would suit me more I kinda agree meh I'l give it some more time to decide
I did the adult branch a few years ago anna_spanner and we never did what u just stated having placements in child, mental health,we just did mainly care of the adult placements expect when i was in the second year and did a maternity placement and that was it.I now applying for mental health which is more my kind of thing.
lol trust the maternity placement to put you off. But yea how do I decide what to aim for between mental health nursing and physiotherapy? It was be quite easy for me to get on a mental health course but I don't know which to go for Ive volunteered on a rehab ward so seen what physio's do to etc.

yeah lol, tbh clinical psychology is a bit out of my reach don't think I could do a phd. Ive thought about OT too yea Id like to get some proper physio experience if possible but everywhere I ring says they don't provide it or only accept students.
Like you say I guess its rare for people to know 100% what they want to do.

You do need to be a bit pushy at times, they were students once and would understand how hard it is to get experience. You'd never know unless you asked!

ooh mental health nursing. its great if your willing to put up with a huge ammount. patients often dont realise they are mentally ill and this can make the job incredibly hard. however its also incredibly rewarding.
feel free to PM me as i can answer your questions as best i can.
