Re: Worried I won't fit in..
im at notts uni and the people i live with and those on my course (midwifery) are not 'rahs' at all. theyre totally down to earth n fun people. there are quite alot of rahs i guess... but from my experience they all/mostly live on campus accommodation as oppose to off campus accommodation. i wouldnt worry bout it, if u dont get on with people u live with then there are plenty of other people to hang out with. xx

Re: Worried I won't fit in..
Honestly, don't worry about it. There are few fewer rahs here than I thought there would be after reading all the posts on here. The vast majority are nice, normal people! Either way, it's such a big uni that you're always going to find like-minded people on your course and through societies etc.

Re: Worried I won't fit in..hey im at notts, its true a hell of a lot people are from public schools, but its not tru there all A-holes, thats from a state schooled socialist with a chip on his shoulder! you'll meet some cool people too(Original post by f.burton)
I got an offer from Nottingham which I was so so pleased about, I haven't been to visit yet (am going to an open day in February) but I have heard from friends at Nottingham Trent and from research on the internet that there are a lot of 'rahs' or 'toffs' at Nottingham and I'm worried I won't fit in as I am a much more down to earth sort of girl..
If anyone has got any opinions on Nottingham and the sort of people who study there then I would love to hear them

Re: Worried I won't fit in..
Don't believe any of this. EVERYBODY affliated to the University of Nottingham, without exception, (that includes the staff; teaching, cleaning or otherwise) are rahs. Granted, by default that makes me a rah, which is the primary drawback of attending this university. The other drawback is that the economics course is too hard.

Re: Worried I won't fit in..Mate if you think Economics is hard at the moment, just wait until you try Introduction to Econometrics next semester!!!(Original post by Lozzaa)

And I don't believe 'everyone affiliated to the UoN are rahs'... -
Re: Worried I won't fit in..Forget Econometrics, i'm dropping Mathematical Economics and going down to Quantitative ASAP. And yeah, I know that not everyone at UoN is a rah, because i'm not retarded. It was like, a joke.(Original post by geoff_yin)

Re: Worried I won't fit in..
If I were you I'd start by ignoring anything a none-Notts student says. They don't know what the hell they're talking about if they aren't at Notts.
Second, yes there is a problem with public schoolers, but it IS going to vary between courses. A friend on the English course reports a pretty low concentration, while my law course might as well be rugger at eton.
Does this cause a problem? Well, yeah, but it's not due JUST to the fact that they have their own range rovers (no lie) and have 'grounds' rather than a garden (again, no lie). It'll be more down to your personality type. Personally, I'm not driven by the desire to make a massive pile of cash, and nor do I come close to the idea that these people have of what a 'lad' should be, so it's pretty hard to relate. It was quite a shock for me because these people just don't exist where I'm from, and going from that to being in the minority is not pleasant.
The high concentration at the uni isn't too bad a problem; they can generally be avoided, though their dominance of social stuff and university culture is a major pain. The real problem comes when your course is full of them, because then you HAVE to interact with them, which for me results in a sense of exclusion. Maybe that won't happen to you, maybe you're more like them, in which case it won't be a problem. -
Re: Worried I won't fit in..Thanks that was really useful, in spite of all this would you still have chosen Notts over another uni if you could go back in time?(Original post by Tippo)

Although I agree with a few of your points regarding dominance of social stuff etc (not that I really give a

who is COOL INNIT, it's university for

sake), it probably doesn't help your cause refering to those who attended public school as "them". Jus' sayin.
I went to a state school, just for the record. -
Re: Worried I won't fit in..It wouldn't make a difference. All of the top UK Uni's are full of rahs and Oxbridge rejects, Notts might have a few more than normal but it doesn't make much difference.(Original post by f.burton)

Re: Worried I won't fit in..But I would say out of the unis I have offers for Notts has most definitely got the most 'rahs', from what I have been told anyway.(Original post by Barny)

Re: Worried I won't fit in..It's in context of the topic, we're talking about 'rahs' as a demographic and a problem at uni.(Original post by Lozzaa)

On choosing Notts over elsewhere, yeah I probably would, there's things I don't like about it, but not enough apply to a completely different uni, and they're probably true everywhere. -

Re: Worried I won't fit in..
I don't like the anti-nottingham vibe... I think they're are a nice mix of people and to get the most out of it you have to get involved. I don't see there being a rah problem... we're all in it together! And the social side of halls is definitely the best (except I didn't say that because if anyone asks i'm anti-cripps mwuhahaha)

Re: Worried I won't fit in..I agree with Tippo's post. You'll get rah's at all top universities for the reason that money can buy grades, whether people want to believe it or not. (I don't mean "buy" in the literal sense here, for those of you who'll try to make a retarded line of argument catching me out on that).(Original post by f.burton)

You seem to have some predjudice against rahs yourself though OP. You need to disabuse yourself from the motion that rahs are inherently bad or boring people. The number of "rahs/toffs/<insert social group here>" at a particular university would have never been the decision that influenced me to go (or in your case not to go) to that particular University. Rather, it was whether the environment seemed like a good place to spend 3 years of my life and the academic class of the university (I do have some ambition in life).
I'm not a rah, but I have loads of freinds that probably would be classified as such. Do I care? Do I

. You'll find freinds wherever you go. Make your decision on how YOU recieved the university at the open day or a campus visit or whatever it is you're doing to view the uni.
I might be changing subject next year to start again as a fresher, primarily because now I'm doing economics (which hitherto i'd never studied) i've realised it's abit crap. Administration permitting, i'll probably restart doing something I enjoy more next year.
