Why do people think it's OK to give someone a 'goat' for Christmas? It's not 'giving' anything, it's swapping someone else's Christmas present for a donation to charity. It's taking someone else's present away because of your own guilt. I think that if you want to donate to charity off your own bat, or if you want to forgo gifts in order to donate to charity instead, then I admire you, and fully salute and respect the fact that you are giving your money to a worthy cause. However, if you don't give me a Christmas present, and 'give' me a charity present to offset your guilt for being a rubbish person who never does anything charitable, you can jog on all the way home. I don't blame the charities for utilising this idea as it clearly gets them a lot of money, I just hate people who think it's acceptable to give to charity and pretend they've given you a present . I wouldn't even mind so much if someone gave money to charity INSTEAD of giving me a present, as most of us do sort of have everything we need, but don't pretend that a card saying 'u got a goat lol' is an acceptable Christmas present.
I hate the moral preciousness that comes with it; the way that it screams 'I'M A GENEROUS PERSON LOOK, I GIVE MONEY TO CHARITY INSTEAD OF BATHING IN THE RIVER OF MATERIALISM'. I give money to charity, I just don't feel the need to tell everyone about it.

Mostly people ask for them, or it's just an extra.
For example, I might pay for a month's teacher training for my teacher as a 'thank you', if she wasn't expecting anything, then it's thoughtful.
But, at the end of the day, there's a meaning behind Christmas, lest we forget, and if one person has a better Christmas, and gets a chance of a better life, and I get one less Xbox game, who am I to be upset?

No, like a teacher in Sierra Leone or something; it means something, because they must have went into teaching for a reason, and it just, I dunno, makes them feel happy I suppose.
It works for me =)
Re: Getting a ******* GOAT For Christmas. It Gets My Goat, Man.
I agree to be honest. But I don't think that people usually give them as a present "instead of" a real present - most of the time the person will say, "I don't want anything," so the person buys the goat thing instead. My mum's sister threatened to do that if my mum didn't tell her what she wanted for Christmas, and she didn't ... so that's what she got!
But yeah, when people do what you said, it's pretty rubbish. It's basically forcing someone else to donate to charity instead of you. Why not donate yourself, rather than making it someone else's loss?
Re: Getting a ******* GOAT For Christmas. It Gets My Goat, Man.
I really like this idea. I did it for my Mum for her birthday, along with taking myself back to London to surprise her. She does it for my Grandad each year and he appreciates it too. I'd far rather have had this than any of the presents I received this year.

ohhh right that makes sense!
i had images of you approaching like your maths teacher or something and presenting them with a cheque to pay for them to receive more training
Re: Getting a ******* GOAT For Christmas. It Gets My Goat, Man.
There's someone I know who complains about whatever I get him, but as he's a family member I have to get him something. I'd like to get him one of those things, as if he's not going to appreciate it, I'd rather it still did some good... but I've been strictly forbidden from doing so by my mum.
Oh, and I've asked for one of those before. I've also given one to another friend, but I knew she'd appreciate it (which she did; she thought it was amazing).

I once had 2 goats: Tinkerbell and Clarabell.
However, after a while they had to go because...
1) They kept trying to headbutt us
2) They kept demolishing the garden by eating all my dad's plants
3) They developed a habit of jumping at the kitchen window, thereby shocking both themselves and us, and hurting their heads.
