Default Eastern & Southern Africa

I am thinking of booking an overland travel between Nairobi (Kenya) to Cape Town (S. Africa) for 10 weeks. During my research i have seen there are quite literally thousands of travel companies offering this experience on their overland trucks. It seems a good deal, HOWEVER i do not think this ties in with traditional back packing values... thus, how SAFE and how EASY do you think it is to travel around Eastern and Southern Africa either on your own or as two people, whilst getting to all the places you would like to see that the overland travel companies take you too!

All suggestions and advice most welcome!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!

Much love, goodnight!
