Re: BUNAC Work America
Hey
I'm also considering the summer programme as I have 3months off this summer. I'll be going into my final year as a medical student - is there anything you guys at BUNAC would particularly recommend to work on on camp where I could use my experience?
Many thanks for any advice

Re: BUNAC Work AmericaAs long as the reference comes from someone who knows you in a professional capacity, it should be fine so you can ask your private tutor from last year.(Original post by RamocitoMorales)
I've registered and printed out the relevant documents. However, regarding the reference, I've come across somewhat of an issue. As I'm currently on holiday, I won't be able to hand in the reference form to my tutor back at university for what will be almost three weeks. So I was wondering whether or not my private tutor who taught me last year would be a suitable referee, or if not, should I just wait until I get back to university then?
Thank you for your help. -

We are no longer recruiting for Summer Camp USA 2011, however you can still do Work America, an amazing programme exclusive to students that allows you to live and work anywhere in the USA for up to 4 months. www.bunac.org.uk/workamerica
If you’ve got experience in nursing or medicine then you may be interested in working on a health care or social work project such as raising HIV/AIDS awareness. We offer volunteer programmes in Ghana, Peru, South Africa and India that allow you to do just this.
In Ghana for example, you will assist staff in clinics and care homes and you could be working with people with physical, emotional or mental disabilities. Your role will involve a range of work from recording medical backgrounds to examining patients. HIV/AIDS is a big problem in Ghana and you may also get involved with an HIV care project.
The facilities will be basic and the additional help and support that you can offer will be of great benefit to the project and provide comfort to those attending the centre. Our Volunteer Ghana placements start from just £83 per week and last 2-6 months and include a five-day arrival orientation. For more information visit www.bunac.org.uk/volunteer/ghana or call 02072510662 -
Re: BUNAC Work AmericaAbsolutely! Work America is open until 3rd May 2011 and we would be happy to transfer the balance you have paid so far directly over to Work America so you would not lose anything you have already paid.(Original post by mint123456)
BUNAC, if I am not placed on the Summer Camp programme, can I apply for the Work America programme? As I am REALLY worried now that I have not been placed. And really want to go to the States this Summer!
Good luck with getting placed - either way you'll have an amazing summer in the States

Re: BUNAC Work America
Do you need BUNAC in order to get a visa? Cos otherwise there will be no real point going with them, I have heard the job directory isn;t very good-- people are applying to jobs posted there and getting no response, I have also heard it is pretty small too!
Also I would be quite concerened about going out there without a job or with anywhere to live. Anyone gone and been like this before?Last edited by mint123456; 07-04-2011 at 21:48. -
Re: BUNAC Work AmericaTo get a visa for the USA is extremely difficult on your own. You must have either the support of an organsiastion like BUNAC, or be able to find a US employer who is willing to pay for and support your US visa applciation, something that usually requires unique or extraordionary skills on the part of the British expat.(Original post by mint123456)

BUNAC's Work America J1 visa is a unique student opportunity - never again will you be able to get a visa this easily and simply head out to America for the summer with the flexibility to find your own job or internship. Personally speaking, I did this programme twice and head out there and found work on arrival - I'm probably a bit disorganised though! I simply spent the first few days handing out CVs and had a waitressing job in the bag after a week. It helped that I was out in the US early in the summer. BUNAC generally recommends being a little more organised and securing a job before you leave but as long as you're flexible and motivated and independent and apply to lots of different jobs, you'll find work without much difficulty. Please feel free to give us a call on 02072510662 if you'd like more info on this programme. There are still jobs available in the directory, however as it is now getting closer to the summer, the majority of employers are keen to finalise their recruitment needs as soon as possible, if they have not already done so.
Have a great summer! www.bunac.org.uk -
Re: BUNAC Work America

Has anyone booked the group flights yet? If so, which date?
--Also BUNAC, when are you gonig to udate your job directory? Got a few emails back from people from there, and all the vaccancies you had listed, jobs had already been filled, I was under the imression this job directory would be kept up-to-date, I don;t want to be wasting my valuable time applying for vaccancies that don't exist!! -

The Job Directory has been updated within the past week. It now includes an exciting opportunity for two Work America members to work in BUNAC's New York office.
Best of luck with your job hunt and don't forget to check out websites such as Intern Queen, Simply Hired and j1jobs. Try to personalise your cover letter for every job you apply to and don't forget to follow up your applications with phonecalls/emails to show enthusiasm.
Try not to panic; in the last week alone, several Work America members have notified us of their new employers details - jobs are available!
Have a great summer, if you need any further assistance with your Work America application please feel free to call us on 020 7251 3362

Re: BUNAC Work AmericaIt's not if you find your own job, or find something for another season it is completely possible.(Original post by Student2806)
I was desperate to do Work America this year, but I found out today that I don't graduate until 30th June
Too late for pretty much everything BUNAC offers.

Re: BUNAC Work AmericaYes also a lot of the jobs on j1jobs.com are offered by people like this who take in j1 students under contract that do not have to be paid minimum wage. Be careful.(Original post by mint123456)

Re: BUNAC Work AmericaHey there!(Original post by WolfSong2000)
Just a quick query...I did the BUNAC work America programme a few years ago (2 years, I think)...if I did it again this year, would I need to have another mebassy interview, or could I just do a postal application?
Unfortunately, you would not be able to do a postal application and would need to pay a little trip to the embassy again. Work America is so worth it though!
Don't forget, deadline for Work America is this Tuesday, 3rd May 2011, don't miss your chance to spend this summer living and working in the most exciting country in the world. www.bunac.org.uk/workamerica -
Re: BUNAC Work AmericaHmmm that doesn't sound right at all! Can you remember where the post was so I can contact the person? It's possible that this person may have been trying to get another visa or was ineligible for a different reason.(Original post by better_days)
I saw a post on by someone who's visa was denied as they did not have a job pre arranged on the work america programme. Can this happen? i thought that it was possible to head out there without a job and look for work whilst over there?
thanks
The J-1 visa that you get on the Work America programme is entirely flexible and you are not required to have a job pre-arranged.
Yes that is enough time - there is no minimum duration for this visa.(Original post by Surreality)
Hi, I've been considering applying for this, but i just wanted to know what's the minimum time we need to be available for? I would only be able to go between the middle of July and the beginning of September - is that enough time or is it not worth it?
Also, the deadline for Work America has now been extended until the 20th May Don't miss your chance to spend this summer living and working in the most exciting country in the world! www.workamerica.org -
Re: BUNAC Work AmericaYes you can do this, however you will need to post your DS2019 to IENA, your US sponsor. For more details on how to do this, simply call 02072510662.(Original post by bexicle89)
One question... does the J1 Visa allow you to exit and re-enter the US during your stay, such if you wanted to go to Canada or Honduras for a week but come back for your flight home?
Thanks.
Have a great summer on Work America! -
