Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?Dentistry because it has the second highest graduate pay out of all professions. Medicine being the first.(Original post by itszednotzee)
I don't get why dentistry seems to be so popular...hmmm (profession with the most suicides - fact.)
Erm Yeah Medicine, Law and Econs probably
Law llb is hard. -
Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?
By no means is Leeds the top university for medicine out there, but here are some stats for this years entry:
Applicants: 3000+
Interviews: 600
Places available: 223
13 (give or take) applicants per place.... at Leeds. I have no stats for London based unis, but i imagine they have way more applicants per place.
As has been said, applicants/places alone doesn't indicate competition, however it's not just a case of getting your grades in medicine. There is a stupid amount of emphasis on volunteer work etc. plus an extra admissions test or two. So i think it's got to take the number one spot.

Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?I would say Economics and Management at Oxford is actually much, much more competitive.(Original post by TwoTimesTwo)

1000 applicants for 90 places. A slightly easier ratio. However, for the vast majority of people Oxford will be 1st choice. Whereas for medicine at Leeds, people will often/usually have a preferred option. Also the quality of the applicants is far higher. (I went to a school sending 50ish medicine applications and 50 ish Oxbridge)
Architecture at Cambridge is similar. -
Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?Very true. I havent got numbers for Oxbridge for medicine but i can imagine that it is equally as, if not more, competitive (stats wise) than Leeds... I simply used Leeds as an example coz i have the numbers. But i rekon it would generally be harder to get into oxbridge at all, over medicine at Leeds.(Original post by Turdburger)

Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?Hmm some unpopular subjects at oxford, like Chemistry, the percentage of successful applicants is 45%, not sure about courses at Cambridge though.(Original post by im so academic)
medicine, law, dentistry, vet med etc
also, every course at oxbridge
You seem very knowledgable about Oxford and Cambridge as you always edit the wiki haha..it's not like you are still taking your GCSE's or anything
Makes me laugh that does, people who think they know everything.

Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?(Original post by prospectivEEconomist)
economists are the most sought after graduates after medicine
that'll change - so many people do economics now, its incredible, even those who arent that gifted as far as academics are concerned. its just a craze. talk about excess supply relative to demand. -
Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?
Well, generally the usual subjects like medicine, law, economics, english, psychology...
I think definately drama/music/acting courses though, i know a few mates who want to get into like top london acting school etc. and the competition just sounds horrendous.
As for uni, i'd say bristol is probably the most oversubscribed uni across the board in general. Just flicking through the prospectus, the general applicants/place ratio is a joke. -
Re: Most competitive degree in the UK?
Does anyone know how the BSc management course at LSE is?
Is it mainly theory or does it have a practical element to it as well?
Do they have monthly assessments and projects and stuff, or do you have a lot of self study and finally have to sit a three hour paper at the end of the term?
Makes me laugh that does, people who think they know everything.
