Default Edexcel (Nuffield) Chemistry: Unit 4 Discussions Thread [20.01.09]

Anyone else sitting this one?

The exam is exactly two weeks away from now so I figured it would be nice to start a thread and help each other out with revision and resources.

I am using the Philip Alan unit guide, specific for our specification and it's proving to be very efficient. My strong topics are rates of reaction, arenes and entropy. I don't really like the stuff on acid-base equilibria - well pH calculations are standard, it's just those titration curves which I find a bit random to draw.

I have attached the June 2008 paper for those who don't already have it.

Thanks - I was never given that one

Acid-base equilibria is the best chapter followed by arenes. Drawing graphs is annoying, so I dislike the rates chapter.

I'm looking forward to it I'm more prepared for chemistry than my other modules (biology and maths) and will finish revision tomorrow. I'll probably go back over all the benzene, phenol and carboxylic acid reactions over the weekend so they're lodged into my brain

I agree with you on all counts bar looking forward to it, mainly because it's an exam and I hate exams.

I need to go over oxidation products of alcohols again since that's my worst topic right now. I've got a few more papers to get through too. I'm a bit timid about the grade boundaries though - from January 05 to June 08, the grade boundary for an A has ranged from 40-48/60 but it's usually around the 45 mark on average.

There are noticeable similarities between most of the papers anyway, so get them all done and you should be fine They haven't asked much about melting point test and recrystalising to purify and identify a carbonyl compound, so it wouldn't surprise me if that comes up

Thanks for the advice and motivation.

If they ask about the melting point test, would you just write something along the lines of...

'Using a minimum volume of hot solvent, the solid precipitate can be recrystallised to find the melting point, which can then be used to identify the the carbonyl compound.'

...or have I missed something out?

Dissolve in minimum amount of hot solvent
(You may need to filter solution using Buchner Flask to eliminate insoluble impurities)
Allow solution to cool and recrystallise
Filter
Wash in pure cold solvent and allow to dry
Test for melting point
Compare to literature value to identify compound

I think it's something like that

Yeah that question came up in the June 2006 paper I just did - pretty tough paper too.

That paper sucked to be honest, typical of Nuffield though.

Out of all the past papers I did worse in June 2006. Got 10/21 in one of the sections, lol. I did do it a long time ago, though so I'll go over it again later. January 2006 was the easiest in my opinion.

Taking this with you lot on Tuesday. Not looking forward to it at all!

!MEna, I've not come across a revision guide for our syllabus before, my teachers are convinced there isn't one. Would you recommend what you're using?
