If anyone has done one as a practical can someone tell me what it involves?

25cm3 base in calorimeter (plastic beaker  )
Take temperature of liquid
add 5cm3 acid from burette stir record new temp
repeat addition stir record new temp
repeat additions until temp consistently reduces after each addition

plot graph of temp against volume acid added

back extrapolate the downwards curve to get the highest point (theoretically) reached where it should have met the upward slope.

find neutralisation point by volume of acid by dropping perpendicular from the highest point reached -

use this as the volume of acid needed for neutralisation

total volume at this point can be used for energy calculation

Extension

calculate energy release from E=m x c x deltaT (mass is total mass of base + acid)

correct energy value to give energy per mole of water formed (use molarity and volume of base used initially)

Yes - enthalpy change of neutralisation.

That's brill, thanks.
