If you don't get your first choice do you have to go to your insurance?

Once all five have replied, you choose one of your offers as a firm choice
and another, normally a lower requirement, as your firm.
The rest are then automatically declined.

Results day, if you meet the offer of your firm choice you go there
If you just miss your firm offer, ring them up and beg.
If they say no or you REALLY missed it, but you DO meet the offer of your insurance, you go there. Its important to make sure you want to go there as i think this is legally binding or something, didnt read the T&C though.
If you just miss this, also ring them up and they may still let you in.
If not, clearing.

that's how I understand it

You do in the sense that that will be your only option as far as university is concerned. But obviously, if you decide you don't even want to go to university any more, you can withdraw completely. Or you can ask your insurance university to 'release' you which will allow you to enter clearing, but they don't have to do this.
