Going Solo / Finding a group

I wanted to travel to NZ for 3 and a half months, get a working visa and travel whilst working. My friend dropped out though and I don't want to do it solo even though I've been told I'll meet people there it's still daunting. IS anyone else going solo/has been? What's it like?
Where can I find a group of people to go with?

I really hate travelling in groups. I prefer to do what I want, go where I want and not have to come to a comprimise my experiences with others. I also don't really get lonely, I usually have my head in a book or my iPod on.

Saying that, if you don't feel like that and you believe that the best bit of travel is the companionship then use Craigslist or gapyear.com to find someone.
