Stay with a host family or in a volunteer house?

I'm planning to go somewhere in South America in the summer but can't decide whether to stay with a local host family or a volunteer house.
I'd really like to practice my spanish, which I could do with a host family.

But at the same time I'm worried I won't meet anyone, or if I do they'll live far from my house, and I'd really like to explore the place with fellow volunteers. If I stayed in a volunteer house I'm bound to meet lots of people my own age. But I probably wouldn't experience the language and culture as much...

Does anyone have any recommendations?
It may be difficult in a host family cos I'm a vegetarian!

Go for the Homestay option.
You are going out there to see a part of the world,
see how other people live etc. as well speaking Spanish.
I think you will regret it if you don't spend at least some of your
time with a local family. Try to get a family with young children
there wil be more life in the house.

I take your point about being a veggie, you will have to work around
that, maybe by preparing a dish yourself to eat along with the family(?).

WRT meeting other travellers or volunteers, I don't think you will have
a problem hooking up with people, you will be working with other
volunteers during the day, and there are plenty of gringo hangouts in
most South American cities.

Ok, good thanks for the advice - I think you're right, host family would be better, especially to experience their culture and language.
Cheers :-)

Why not try both, travel, then homestay and mix it up.

Sounds an exciting trip
How would it work for going out and suff if you're with a host family though? Are there going to be pretty strict rules etc?
