Default Clearing q.

Say I was to phone a university and ask them if they had any clearing spots for law (I know this doesn't happen often!) but had also applied to do another course at the same university would they get pissed off and take the other course offer off me? It's the only thing really stopping me phoning them on results day.
Thanks.

Well, you can't go through clearing if you're still holding offers for other universities/courses. Clearing is either for those who missed their firm/insurance choice, or didn't apply at all for that academic year but still have the required results for certain courses at certain universities and want to go. You would need to be released from whichever university/course offer it is you hold before ringing anywhere up about a place in clearing. Check the wikis/previous threads/guides etc. here and elsewhere which have more information on the process.

Thanks, couldn't I just phone them up and ask them if they would give me a place without going into clearing yet? And if they say yes (i doubt they will though :P) i could go into clearing with the knowledge that they'd have a space for me?

if your saying you want to go to the same uni but switch courses, many unis are fine with this as long as the grades are on par

If you already know at this stage that you want to do a different course (at a university you already have a place at I'm assuming), it's best to let them know now. Is it a completely different course to the one you originally applied for? If you're unhappy with your course choice at all of your universities, you could decline any offers and see what's available in UCAS Extra.

When are you thinking of phoning them up? Calling them up on results day after looking at clearing lists is exactly the same as what a normal clearing applicant would do. I don't think it's a good idea to be dealing with all of this on results day, though - as phone lines will be extremely busy/clogged up with lots of people ringing universities about their grades and places. You need to either sort it out in advance or officially go into clearing when the time comes.

Hmm. Well I've applied for psychology (I wouldn't mind being a forensic psychologist!) but I've always really wanted to be a lawyer. I messed up my highers and while I have the grades for some not as high ranked universities, I'd rather not go there... it was Strathclyde university I had in mind. I'm not saying I'll definitely do it though, I was just wondering :P because in clearing the grades are usually made lower, aren't they? Meh, I doubt they'll even be in clearing! Thanks for your help. I don't know what UCAS extra is... I'll have a look into it now.

Sometimes they're made lower, depending on how many people missed their offers/didn't take up places etc. It all depends on the uni and the course so you won't really find out until then. And definitely look into UCAS Extra - this is normally for people who don't get any offers first time round (so they have another shot basically), but can equally be for people who have changed their minds.
