What unis do Veterinary Science?Apologies for the ultra-noob question in your forum, but I'm trying to help my younger sister out.
I'm already at uni and loving it of course
She's in lower 6th at the moment, and wants to do Veterinary Science at uni.
I told her i'd help her out asking a friend who does the course, as I know someone doing it at Liverpool. Anyway, seems that friend is uncontactable!
So I thought i'd come and ask you guys as you're probobly experts, which unis actually DO the course? So far I think i know.. Liverpool, Bristol, Edinburgh, Royal something? (Apologies, this really isn't my field of expertise!)
She's an ABBish student, doing Maths and the 3 sciences at AS level.
Thanks in advance, and sorry for nubness! -
Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?Edinburgh, Glasgow, Bristol, RVC, Cambridge, Liverpool and Nottingham. There are seven and you can make four choices. In terms of grades - she will need AAB at A level (except RVC and Cambridge where you need AAA if I am correct and you also need to do a bmat). She's doing the right sumjects anyway!(Original post by Khanage)

Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
Bristol
Cambridge
Edinburgh
Glasgow
Liverpool
Nottingham
Royal Veterinary College
Standard offer is AAB.
Work experience is essential. The minimum you can get away with is 6 weeks varied practise (ie 2 in a vet practise, 4 on farms/kennels/animal husbandry) but livepool want at least 10 weeks. Cambridge don't stipulate an amount.
Except for very rare cases, all unis interview before offering a place.Last edited by ashefbjhsdab; 09-01-2009 at 19:36. -
Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
liverpool, nottingham, rvc (london), bristol, cambridge, glasgow and edinburgh.
academic wise
Liverpool: AAB to inculde bio and 1 other science or maths
Notts: AAB with A's in chem and Bio
RVC: AAA-ABB majority of offers AAA. ABB are for the expceptional at interiview. 2 sciences i think with at least 1 of chem and bio and 3rd subject academic.
Bristol: AAB to inculde bio and chem (i think? correct me somone if wrong)
Camb: AAA preferably 3 sciences or maths
Glasgow: AAB to inculde chem and another science of maths
Edin: AAB or ABBB to inculde chem at A then bio and physics and/or maths
She needs to aim for AAB tbh.
Also she needs work exp, lots of. most unis ask for a min of 6 weeks but liverpool ask for 10 (4 weeks vet and 6 weeks other) if she aims for this then she will be covered w/e wise to fill the requirments for all unis. try and get lambing, dairy, kennels and then a few places that not as many will have, abatoir, poltury, pigs.
Edit: oli bristol, liverpool and RVC dont require chem to be an A. Liverpool dont even require chem as long as you have bio and another science. -
Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
Thanks jenny, I'll remove that.
This thread is really useful for work experience info:

Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
Has she started doing any work experience?
And as started above, she should really be doing her own research, because it truly is very competitive. But at least she's getting her information somewhere.
As people have stated, Cambridge, Bristol, Royal Veterinary College, Nottingham, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin all do it. I recommend she orders the prospectuses off the websites; they all allow you to do so.
In the meantime, tell her to join TSR, there's loads of stuff about Vet Med on here and I find it really useful. I'm in Lower Sixth too. -
Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
lets not forget the need for work experience
liverpool ask for the most @ 4weeks seeing vet practice at two different practices + 10 non vet i.e. dairy, lambing, kennels/cattery/grooming parlour, horse related experience, zoo, abbatoir.
As i said this is the most asked for but as the calibre of appicants is soooo high she will need this and the grades to really improve her chances, realistcally if she has non atm it might be a better idea to take a gap year, get the work experience and apply then.
edit: should be 6 weeks, 10weeks in totalLast edited by x_Bex_x; 10-01-2009 at 01:19. -
Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
no your own pets dont count, or else we would all be set! if you mean go to the place where you send your cats then yes. the reason they ask for it is handeling lots stange animals( i.e. not met them before not necesarily exotics) respecfully, dealing with the general public, getting you to do some pretty boring menial labour to check your dedication, among other things

Re: What unis do Veterinary Science?
its difficult to say you will have to learn about them, but there isnt loads of content, I personally hate spiders but I made my self hold one so i could deal with one if i had to, i would just have pulse rate of 300 and be shaking... anyhoo, you maybe need to get some exposure to them and try and build up your coping stagatgies
