Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Welcome to the University College forum: where prospective and current students can discuss anything about UCL.

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadI was let in despite getting a 2 in Spanish (my offer was for 1 in the subject). I also know a linguist that was let despite missing her offer, but I also know another applicant that wasn't let in for law and Spanish law. It depends on subject and especially on the number of places. If there are some places left, they'll probably let you in. I wouldn't rely on it completely though.(Original post by flume)
Does anyone know if UCL are lenient if you miss your offer by a grade?
(I'd love to know how jelly1000 came to her conclusion; she's not affiliated with UCL any way as far as I know, therefore I find it strange she replies to the questions here.) -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Is it EVER possible to switch degrees to English?
I have an offer for Modern Languages but I'm honestly having doubts about it. I've heard it's nigh on impossible to change to English as the course is so oversubscribed...which is understandable, of course. But is there any possibility? Can you apply during first year while studying another subject? -

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadUh freshers fiesta on the 2nd night of freshers was 14, apart from a boat party which was 25 or so everything else was under 6 quid. So it depends how many events you want to do and what kind / if you'll be drinking there or beforehand / not at all.(Original post by nikhil.shah)
Could someone give me a rough idea of how much freshers week costs? I've heard some events cost £20
so just wanted to know how much in total the average person spends on going out during freshers week. Thanks

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadExplained a few posts above.(Original post by Hovgoro)
Hello. If the condition of the conditional offer isn't met, does that mean that the one should definitely be not admitted? For instance, I should present transcripts of overall grade at least 70% but may be it will nearly 69,3%. -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Hi !
I hold an offer from Bartlett but i will not meet all conditions ;/ I am international student and i would like to know if I still have a chance to study there ? I mean do thay take a-levels very strict or it is more about the interview ? thanks -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadFresher's ball is £20, fresher's fiesta is £14. Those are the two most expensive though and none of the other events are anywhere near that. They're both good fun though - Fresher's ball is two weeks in and tends to be better as you've made proper friends by then, not just your flatmates who you've known for a day. I spent a LOT during fresher's but you can keep it down by predrinking, living off toast and noodles etc.(Original post by nikhil.shah)

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
I've firmed an offer from UCL for Law with French Law but I'm going to be 17 for the whole first term of 1st year - yeah, I'm really young for my year. I'm really really keen to throw myself into Freshers' Week and get socialising and making friends and partying, but I'm worried that because I'm not 18 my enjoyment of Freshers' Week will be hindered and I'll be forced to stay in halls with all the boring and anti-social people. Are 17 year olds usually able to fully particpate in Freshers' Week?

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Depends how old you look. One of my friends was constantly IDed trying to get into UCLU in first year because she looks about 12. Pretty sure you need ID for all the freshers events. But as PJ said, a lot of people predrink in halls first, so you'll be able to join in with that.
Basically, everywhere in London you need ID. There might be the odd place that doesn't check, but I can't think of any off the top of my head. -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Yeah you need ID for all the freshers events. UCLU doesn't generally ask for ID, only your studentid. I look really young but don't get ID'd in most of the proper pubs but every so often it'll happen.
Most people also pre-drink in halls during freshers because it's a good way to meet people who are going to the same place that night so it's really good for socializing, so you'll still be able to meet lots of people. -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
Hey. everyone keeps talking about fresher's week
My question is when is it exactly? :P
I mean we get our accomodation by the 22/9 hopefully and ucas says my course Architecture starts on the 24th.
Does uni start on the 24th along with the fresher's week and lessons start next monday (1st??) how does it work? :/ -

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadFreshers Fortnight from the day you move into halls which is 22nd I guess. The second week often consists of introductory lectures/admin rather than actually starting the course.(Original post by Kourtis)

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadIt's a nightmare trying to change. My boyfriend tried to change once he was at UCL and they basically said he would have to leave and reapply. I think with some department you can change at the end of your first year- so, do a year of languages and then afterwards start as a first year English student(Original post by Boom.Squish)

Too be honest, it's probably more hassle than it's worth. -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadYou need ID in London everywhere, to be honest.(Original post by fawltyfan)

However, to get into the Union they only ever ask for your student ID, which doesn't have your birthday on so you'll be able to go in there.
Make the most of the parties in halls. Or, throw yourself into societies, as they have ALOT going on in Freshers. I missed a lot of Fresher's club events as I was busy doing stuff with a society. -
Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official ThreadOh dear, sounds horrible. I'm pretty happy doing what I'm doing now, I was just thinking of the worst case scenario, really. I better love my course!(Original post by coffee-spoons)

Re: Ask a Current UCL Student: The Official Thread
When June 7th (2013) is listed as the last day of the third term, does that mean that's when all classes will be over for sure, and that exams will happen in the weeks following? Or is that the date when all exams will be over by?
Thanks in advance!
