Why are people sexist?

Sexism: by its simplest definition, is discrimination based on the gender to which people belong. People with sexist beliefs might hate certain groups of people according to their gender

So why are people so prejudiced against a group of people? Why do we disciminate? We are all people, human beings no matter whats on the outside, the inside is the same... If theres something you dont like about a particular gender, surely there is no need to hate or discriminate against everyone related to that group.

For example, some men hate women because they smell of perfume. Now perfume is a traditional product from many parts of the world and many people are not used to that kind of smell, and yes perfume does have a strong smell. How do you tell someone they smell of perfume, 'politely'? If you dont, your gonna end up hating them arent you? lol

But whats wrong with different genders? Why hate someone whose a man or a woman? Apart from the current crisis in pay inequality, leave that for another topic. But why would you not like someone because he/she has a lower/higher voice, has reproductive organs outside/inside his/her body, or wears male/female clothes or has short/long hair?

Just in the interests of having threads on all kinds of discrimination, in order not to discriminate in favour of one particular type of discrimination...

I don't know..seems to just stem from old, traditional beliefs that men are better than women, that men should be the breadwinners etc

Yep. All part of the fundamental and self-evident truth that all types of unfair discrimination are equally serious/wrong, regardless of whether they be about gender, age, skin colour, hair colour, eye colour, hat colour, shirt colour...

EDIT: Although some people might be more violent with different types of discrimination, fundamentally it is all equally serious no matter what the reason for the discrimination. The thing that should be viewed as most abhorrent is the ACTUAL violent acts done, not the rationale/prejudice behind it.

EDIT #2: Hmm, seems my other thread about ageism was deleted. Seems like people don't care about ageist discrimination, I suppose it's not as trendy to be anti-ageist as it is to be anti-racist. Even though, of course, being anti-ageist/sexist/racist are just different specialisms of being anti-discrimination, which is the main topic. Instead of 'Stamp out racism', why not just 'Stamp out ALL forms of unfair discrimination'?

And sexism yes is limited to wages pretty much now besides the lack of activities at schools. Nothing really major anymore. Like no voting or no jobs or KKK (the German system for Women... Kitchen, Church, Children). Racism is much worse at the moment.

Maybe you still get the odd- women should be at home cooking, looking after the kids, are bad drivers ( I agree) but it's all minor really.

I don't know. I'm not sexist or anything but I'd say a woman's work is never done. And that's why they get paid less. :yep:

No. Perhaps racism is more PREVALENT at the moment, and perhaps people at the moment who are committing acts of racism are being more violent in their actions. But fundamentally, this doesn't make racism itself worse than sexism. Just as it doesn't make discrimination on basis of race any worse than discrimination on basis of gender, or age, or hair colour, or eye colour, or any other characteristic. Once again people, the important thing is the ACTION, not the TYPE of discrimination/prejudice used as an excuse for committing the action. So for example, killing someone because you don't like their race is worse than punching someone because you don't like their gender. But similarly, killing someone because you don't like their gender is worse than punching someone because you don't like their race. Think about it people!

People are not sexist because of the reality/science/psychology of sex and gender. They are sexist because of the attitude, media portrayal and general assumptions that are attributed to genders. For example, someone might hate women because they whine about small things. This is not necessarily something sex-based or even a scientific fact, but it's so well-represented "thanks to" the media which deeply infiltrates people's minds through shows, films, etc. and therefore gives the feeling that these attitudes are real, so when people actually do find it true e.g. one of their friends is a whiny little girl, then they think "Right, so the media is right, all women must be like this,"
